CSULB Women in Computing (WiC)'s School Outreach Program ? ?? It's time to highlight one of WiC's most impactful programs ?? Beginning Fall of 2023 Women in Computing at California State University, Long Beach collaborated with multiple schools across Southern California to serve as educators for young students interested in technology ???? Our members visited middle and high schools with presentations covering various topics from the basics of programming with Lego Mindstorms to demonstrating the endless possibilities of Pololu Zumo robots ?? These young students were eager to learn more about programming from our Outreach Team and gained hands-on experience with controlling the actions of these robots ?? Women in Computing has been able to mentor over 100 students and watch their understanding of programming blossom over the 6-week outreach cycles and it has been incredibly rewarding to see these students succeed in STEM-related challenges ?? For example, during CSULB's MESA Day Event meant to facilitate Math, Engineering, Science, and Achievement, all five of the coding contest winners came from the middle school classes WiC members outreached at! What an achievement ?? ?? It has been such an honor serving our community and witnessing young students grow interested in technological fields ?? Through this program, we have been able to lead a new generation of programmers and prove that anyone, regardless of gender, can become an engineer ?? We are so excited to continue this program and work with new schools during the Spring Semester ?? A huge thank you to our Outreach Team and School Outreach Lead, Gaurav Paryani, for being so passionate about this program and taking WiC to new heights ?? Thank you so much to Break Through Tech for joining CSULB Women in Computing (WiC) this week to present an amazing opportunity to our members ?? It was lovely to have Nicole Feliciano, Break Through Tech LA's Assistant Director and CSULB Alumni, kindly come in to share more about the Break Through Tech Program, we were so happy to host her return to the Beach ?? Our members Nhu Nguyen and Reyna Aguirre-Okamune were also able to share their experiences in the programs 2023-2024 cohort and it was inspiring to see the hard work of members of our community ?? Nhu showcased her team's project with Direct TV where she developed a Computer Vision model that can detect and track players in a field to enhance sports replays ?? While Reyna developed a language translation model using natural language processing to providing language support to indigenous communities with BrainStreet ?? Thank you again to Break Through Tech and Nicole Feliciano for this amazing presentation and providing opportunities for students from underrepresented groups in technology! Our mission at CSULB Women in Computing (WiC) is to always support women and non-binary individuals succeed in the tech space while creating a welcoming community for all students ??
