21st Century Solutions to 21st Century Risks
关于我们
The Council on Strategic Risks (CSR) is a nonprofit, non-partisan security policy institute devoted to anticipating, analyzing and addressing core systemic risks to security in the 21st century, with special examination of the ways in which these risks intersect and exacerbate one another. To further this goal, CSR currently hosts non-partisan institutes on climate and security (The Center for Climate and Security), strategic weapons risks (The Center on Strategic Weapons), and a program that connects the two (The Bridge Project), which includes the Climate-Nuclear-Security Program. The CSR also hosts Council Members – practitioners and scholars pursuing individual research and policy programs that explore systemic risks to security, and the intersections between them. The CSR contends that though societies are facing unprecedented risks, they also possess unprecedented foresight, and this dynamic creates a “Responsibility to Prepare.”

???? #Biodiversity is the foundation for security: myriad micro-organisms filter and purify fresh water, the most basic essential for survival; pollinators hold the front line of food production; complex interactions across ecosystems regulate pests and disease vectors; forests, lakes, and coral reefs sustain livelihoods and economic stability. To explore the security consequences resulting from critical biodiversity loss, CSR hosted a one-day scenario exercise in London during the summer of 2024, with the exercise subject being the #LakeVictoria Basin in Sub-Saharan equatorial Africa. In short, participants determined that addressing transboundary challenges requires regional collaboration and coordination. Robust environmental regulations backed with strong enforcement mechanisms should be prioritized, as should encouraging private sector investments away from exploitation and toward sustainability. Domestically, holistic security measures should facilitate community-centered sustainable management practices, nature-based solutions, and resourced policy responses that account for the integrated vulnerabilities and risks posed by ecological disruption. Read more on the scenario, the parameters explored, and the potential future pathways for the region in Louise Selisny's latest report for CSR's Ecological Security Program, featuring David Michel's backgrounder. https://lnkd.in/e7m2z6pY

???? The next White House will inherit the most dangerous strategic security environment since the end of the Cold War. Russia’s ongoing onslaught against Ukraine, a rapidly arming China, and increased emerging technology threats are all contributing to a reassessment of US #nuclear weapons policy approaches and needs. The outcomes of policy debates in the coming years will fundamentally shape the long-term arc of nuclear weapons risks. ?? ? "First, the United States and the international community are beginning to benefit from the start of an era of innovative collaborations, in particular regarding technological advancement and efforts to navigate changes in the civil nuclear field. ? Second, while advancements in #nuclear reactors themselves often see media coverage and policy attention, there is significant and exciting science and technological innovation occurring that needs consistent investment. These investments are needed in order to be prepared for a near future characterized by major changes in civil #nuclearenergy, as well as evolving proliferation and nuclear security risks." ??
