My colleague Bhaven Sampat and I had a great experience running a discussion and mini-lectures on U.S. Science and Technology Policy yesterday at the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellows orientation for 2024/2025 (and beyond). We addressed budget allocation decisions through a table exercise, then spoke about the origins of US S&T policy and current challenges, including ways of furthering use-inspired research and fully engaging communities in research and tech development. Great questions from a very engaged group that gives me real hope for the future impact they will have!

It was a pleasure to visit the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University this week, learning more about our colleagues’ interesting work that intersects science, technology, and policy at Washington, D.C.! ????????? #ASUResearch

This summer I had the opportunity to live in the nation's capital and serve as a research intern at the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes. This incredible experience exposed me to new research areas I had never worked with before. I worked with Dr. Bhaven Sampat on projects regarding patent policy and distortion within the National Institutes of Health and NASA's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. I also worked with Dr. Arthur Daemmrich on a project about public participation in science in collaboration with the Federation of American Scientists, which I am continuing as I return to Mississippi State University. This internship was truly a life-changing experience and I am excited for the future of all these projects.

The CSPO Team is having an active summer with various talks, workshops, and research projects in progress. Here is our highlighted topic of the day: June was a significant month for CSPO's efforts to connect experts, stakeholders, and the public in research, education, and policy-making. On June 13th and 14th, Mahmud Farooque helped organize a National Academies Board on Science Education workshop, gathering leaders and research champions from various sectors to explore coordination and capacity building. He moderated a session with university leaders from Morehouse School of Medicine, UC Davis, and Brown University on addressing tensions related to values, traditions, and priorities through innovative approaches.

The CSPO team and several collaborators were active with the ICSSI (International Conference on Science of Science and Innovation – yes, science of science!) at the National Academies this week. CSPO professor Bhaven Sampat was on the organizing committee, our collaborator Jonathan Coopersmith presented a framework to analyze failure built from historical analysis and emeritus director Dan Sarewitz led a dynamic panel on the “Uses (and non-uses) of Evidence in S&T Policy.”?
