What is in the $61 billion aid package for Ukraine? How quickly will aid reach the front lines? What effect will this have on the war? #Ukraine would have lost the war without U.S. military aid. The $61 billion aid package for Ukraine will produce an immediate surge in deliveries of military equipment after they dramatically tapered off last fall. The resumption of U.S. military aid means that Ukrainian resistance will stiffen. It will be able to slow or stop Russian attacks and even launch its own limited local counterattacks. What happens after that is a crucial question for the Ukrainians. Learn more from Mark Cancian and Chris H. In their latest commentary, Dr. Benjamin Jensen and Jacob Clayton argue that the incoming Trump administration should forge a new grand strategy that puts energy and markets at the center of its decisionmaking. The U.S. must prioritize integrating?energy infrastructure?and?digital trade systems?to secure resources, promote ethical and sustainable markets, and counter authoritarian influences in global trade. By focusing on?sustainable trade practices, the U.S. can strengthen global supply chains, foster economic development in emerging markets, and position itself as a leader in creating a stable, prosperous world order. Next week's 29th Session of the Conference of States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (#OPCW) is an opportunity to revitalize accountability and global cooperation in an age of impunity. The erosion of the chemical weapon norm highlights the urgent need for renewed accountability and multilateral cooperation to uphold global arms control frameworks amid rising violations by states like Syria, Russia, and Iran. "The United States needs a clear military strategy that ensures Kyiv negotiates from a position of strength," writes Dr. Benjamin Jensen. He argues that for Ukraine to negotiate from a position of strength, the U.S. must support a three-pronged strategy that enhances strike capabilities, tests new military policies and technologies, and builds equitable multinational support. By doing so, it sends a message to Russia that any future aggression will come with severe consequences, thereby deterring potential escalations. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eDZDckwJ

Thrilled to share the latest Project Atom report, a CSIS Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) effort to explore intra-war deterrence in a two-peer environment. I'm grateful to have co-led this important analysis as part of the PONI study team, alongside Heather Williams and Lachlan MacKenzie. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/eySuNUM4 The findings of this report are more salient now than ever before. As we write in the introductory chapter, "By anticipating scenarios in which adversaries escalate regionally, potentially concurrently, the U.S. and its allies can strengthen deterrence and reduce the likelihood of adversaries exploiting perceived weaknesses. Preparing for multiple scenarios is not about seeking war, but about enhancing deterrence to prevent it altogether." If the Department of Defense is to build its deterrent strategies in a tailored manner, considering gender more centrally in its operations is essential. Omitting gender, and gender perspectives, from defense planning creates enormous blind spots toward adversary weaknesses and opportunities to leverage ally and partner strengths. Strategic analysis requires more than memos and presentations in the 21st century. In this new commentary, the CSIS Futures Lab outlines how to integrate AI/ML into the National Security Council.
Ask yourself, why is it even midsize businesses use AI but the upper echelons of U.S. foreign policy are immune to data analysis and algorithmic reasoning? Check out my call for the Trump administration to integrate AI into the National Security Council. It won't replace policy analysts. It will catalyze a revolution in strategic analysis. #AI #strategy #geopolitics #Trump #foreignpolicy #NSC https://lnkd.in/eMUYpPuA

A new Administration and Congress are set to take office in January 2025. Securing critical minerals supply chains to reduce reliance on China is a top challenge for incoming policymakers. Strong critical minerals policies are imperative for safeguarding American national, energy, and economic security interests. This is particularly important if the U.S. wants to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities for defense technologies, semiconductors, and automotive. The CSIS Critical Minerals Security Program published 7 recommendations for incoming policymakers to address domestic bottlenecks, develop incentives and financing tools, and leverage commercial diplomacy.
