Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently shared insights on President Donald Trump's first 60 days in office at the Free Enterprise Summit. During her speech, she highlighted Iowa's own 2023 government alignment, which led to an impressive $217 million in income tax cuts. Notably, Iowa's program wasn't launched with the same deficit challenges faced by the United States, showcasing the responsible approach to fiscal policy here in Iowa. Congratulations to Lisa Feuerbach, Ben Murrey and the whole Common Sense Institute Iowa Team for a successful inaugural Free Enterprise Summit. As part of my role with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, I'm more used to giving awards than getting them. But I let Lisa talk me into this one in exchange for a few seconds at the microphone to emphasize why I believe the mission of Common Sense Institute is so important at this critical time in Iowa and U.S. history: Civility matters. Tough debates about crucial public policy matter. When we listen to different perspectives and when we allow facts and data to drive our reasoning, we all wind up with a better understanding of the risks and rewards, of the consequences and the opportunities. Society suffers when we put ourselves in echo chambers and have one-way debates. Or no debates at all. Too often today, people are reflexively for or against something because of who said it or which party proposed it instead of listening to what is actually being proposed. How do we overcome this dangerous trend in political discourse? Well, facts are a pretty darn good place to start a conversation about solutions.?

In January, Iowa gained 1,400 jobs, but only 4 of 11 major sectors contributed to this growth! Government jobs contributed the most at 2,900—meaning without them, the state would have lost 1,500 jobs on the net.
