CSA Project Scientist Eugenia Thomas recently presented at the 17th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium held in Hong Kong, China between January 12–17, 2025. Eugenia is currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Deep-sea Biology at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. At the conference, she presented her thesis results on deep-sea wood falls off Montserrat, which serve as vital habitats for biodiversity. Her research enhances understanding of Montserrat's deep ocean and the Caribbean, an under-explored region due to limited resources and capacity. Eugenia’s research and conference attendance were made possible through the support of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, SpeSeas, Our Shared Ocean program, and a Pew Marine Fellowship. "My experience at the conference was truly enriching. I was immersed in cutting-edge research and inspiring discussions, and I connected with experts in my field. The knowledge I gained will be invaluable in my career at CSA, enhancing our ability to conduct marine environmental studies in deepwater environments,” shared Eugenia. CSA believes in strong community participation on scales large and small. This past Saturday, January 11, three CSA family members kicked off our 2025 commitment to community involvement by running a 5K at the Kiplinger Conservancy in support of the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center. CSA’s Health and Safety Manager Stephanie Urquhart was joined by Jodi Harney, CSA’s Vice President of Energy, and Mike Fearn of CSA’s geotechnical sister company, Bluefield Geoservices, to run newly opened trails surrounding a gopher tortoise preserve in Palm City, Florida. Braving chilly rain, the CSA team showed that even small actions can make a difference. The Treasure Coast Wildlife Center plays a vital role in protecting local wildlife and habitats, and we're proud to support their mission. Learn more about the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center at https://www.tcwild.org/ and the Kiplinger Conservancy at https://lnkd.in/gkxR9829. Stay tuned for pictures of CSA’s participation in the 3rd Annual American Offshore Energy Clay Shoot in Houston in February!

We are excited to announce that CSA Ocean Sciences’ (CSA) Fisheries Ecologist Jenna O'del will be attending the Southern New England Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) winter 2025 meeting next week, January 15, in New Bedford, MA. Jenna will be presenting some important work carried out by CSA over the last 18 months to evaluate the habitat enhancement effects of Nature-Inclusive Design Materials proposed for cable and scour protection around offshore wind turbines. The initial findings were previously presented by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) at the national AFS meeting (https://lnkd.in/efx5fyuA), but the regional focus of next week’s meet will extend these key learnings to new audiences, including port authorities along the New England coast where there are several offshore wind projects in progress. #seathedifference #fisheries #marinescience
