10 years ago I met someone that changed my life in more ways than one. Rarely do we get to meet people in our lives who always make us want to be better, challenge us, and that we can grow alongside. That person to me is Kendra (Kenny) Wilkins. When we met, we both were early in our careers at our previous company, NextRoll. We connected because we both deeply cared about customer outcomes and, sometimes to other people’s frustration, our relentless commitment to making them successful. Not long after, we found ourselves in product management where we turned that commitment into an actual product. We always took on the most challenging areas of the business, we loved solving problems people said couldn’t be solved. Kendra complemented me in so many ways - I’ve always been outcome-driven, sometimes to the point of losing sight of the fact that success comes from working as a team. While I could execute, I sometimes did so at the expense of work relationships. Kendra gave me the perspective that the best teams aren’t built from “copies” of high performers, but from people who complement each other’s strengths. Kendra has an innate ability to truly listen, see people for who they are, and invest in their potential. As a team, we were able to get sh** done, build incredible teams, and stay close to the customer. We did work that mattered, with people that cared. Early on, I knew that Kendra was someone I wanted to keep close for the rest of my life. She wasn't just a co-worker but became my close friend, a family away from home, and now my Co-Founder. When we started Joyn, we talked about what it meant to start a company together while maintaining a friendship. Our friendship mattered, and so did making Joyn a successful business. We had tough conversations early but never in conflict, we talked about values before knowing what Joyn would be. Having Kendra as my Co-Founder is something I am grateful for every day, it’s not lost on me how rare it is to have the relationship we have and not only sustain it but grow it by running Joyn together. To me, the easiest thing about running a startup is doing it with Kendra. I’m excited to one day find ourselves together on a porch in our 80s talking about how we met in our early 20s, built a business together in our 30s, and about what’s yet to come. Kendra (Kenny) Wilkins, thank you for being you, you’re a once in a lifetime person to have as a part of my life.
