Happy GIS Day! Don't know what GIS is? GIS or Geographic Information Systems are used to capture, analyze, and visualize spatial and geographic data, helping us understand relationships, patterns, and trends in a way that maps alone can't. At CRW we get hyped about GIS, mainly because our resident GIS Analyst and expert, Noah Irby, GISP, makes it sound so cool! GIS Day is a fantastic opportunity to explore how spatial thinking and GIS technology shape our understanding of the world. Read on for some fun GIS facts courtesy of Noah! 1. GIS Day Origin GIS Day was first celebrated in 1999 as a way to increase awareness of GIS technology and its impact on the world. 2. Global Impact GIS technology is used worldwide in fields like urban planning, environmental conservation, disaster management, public health, transportation, and even archaeology. 3. Disaster Response GIS has played a crucial role in disaster response, helping map areas affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. 4. COVID-19 Tracking During the COVID-19 pandemic, GIS was instrumental in tracking the spread of the virus and providing data visualizations that informed public health policies. 5. Ancient Maps Meet Modern Tech GIS technology can digitize and analyze ancient maps, helping historians understand historical landscapes and changes over time. 6. Popular Use in Apps Everyday apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Pokémon GO use GIS technology to deliver location-based services and experiences. 7. Environmental Protection Conservationists use GIS to monitor deforestation, wildlife habitats, and climate change impacts, allowing for better strategies to protect the environment. 8. Real-world 3D Modeling Modern GIS tools can create 3D models of cities and landscapes, which are used for urban planning, gaming, and virtual reality applications. 9. Interactive Story Maps GIS storytelling tools, like Esri’s StoryMaps, allow users to combine maps with text, images, and videos to share compelling narratives about geography, history, and current events. Happy GIS Day to all – for all your GIS needs – come visit CRW and talk to Noah! He's your GIS guy!

Our amazing Engineer-in-Training, Sydney Van Frost, organized a great AWWU/Chugach Electric Ship Creek Energy Recovery Station tour as part of her volunteer work with the AWWMA Young Professionals Chapter. Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility led the tour and we got to see the giant 54” water pipe coming in from Eklutna, going through the world’s largest Cla-Val 90-degree pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) (see last picture), and then into huge heat exchangers (shown on the right in the third picture) that cool water from Chugach’s electricity plant and heat the raw Eklutna drinking water that goes into our drinking water distribution lines.

Today we honor our Veterans. We honor the extraordinary selflessness and strength of the American patriots who have served in the U.S. military. Today and every day, we give thanks to the generations of men and women who have answered the call to protect our country. They have defended our freedoms and upheld the values of liberty, justice, democracy, and the rule of law that define us as Americans. I’m proud that CRW has current and former veteran employees. ? Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th every year. The day was originally celebrated as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I in 1918. The armistice between the Allies and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Five amazing CRW CReWsers participated in the 16-mile Lost Lake Run last weekend: Ted, Chevy, Hailey, Meg, and Colin. The team came in 8th with an average time of 2:48.40. Out of over 600 participants, Colin was the 10th overall male and 6th in his age group. Hailey was the 5th overall female and 2nd in her age group. Way to go CReW! CRW raised $3,000 for Cystic Fibrosis, inspired CReW members to run it for the first time, and fun was had by all! Way to go, CReW! https://www.crweng.com/ Race Results: https://lnkd.in/gj72cAUv
