With over 25 years of experience in refining and operations, Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our team. His extensive background includes major project execution, process unit management, and operator training, making him a valuable addition to our team and the clients we serve. Mike most recently served as Operations Manager at LanzaJet, where he developed SOPs and training materials for new operators while overseeing construction reviews for operability. Before that, he spent nearly 25 years at Marathon Petroleum, holding various leadership roles including Area Team Leader, Day Foreman, and Operator. During his time at Marathon, he managed operations across multiple refining units, such as FCCU, HF Alky, Benzene Extraction, and DHTs, while leading teams in optimizing safety and efficiency. Mike’s commitment to safety, operational excellence, and team development aligns perfectly with CruzAlta’s mission. What do you do? I help clients identify actionable opportunities for continuous improvement across their Turnaround Management and Operations organizations. Whether they operate a single unit, an entire site, or a large manufacturing network, our clients share a strong commitment to sustainable performance improvement in turnaround activities. My role involves collaborating with executives, directors, managers, and technical and operational teams. Together, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of their current turnaround processes, practices, and organization. This analysis helps pinpoint the most high-impact actions they can take to achieve world-class turnaround performance. What do you enjoy most about your role? One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is building relationships with passionate refining and manufacturing professionals across North America. During consulting engagements, we develop a deep understanding of their operations. This transparency reveals the exceptional professionalism and dedication that these talented individuals possess. The level of sincerity I consistently encounter reinforces my pride in working within the refining and manufacturing industry. What are key focus areas in your work? My focus areas encompass both the core principles of turnaround management and the unique nuances specific to each client, site, and often, even individual units. While turnaround continuous improvement has traditionally focused on the turnaround management phase, significant opportunities exist in the operations bookends – from de-commissioning and handover to maintenance, to commissioning and startup after major mechanical completion. Many facilities acknowledge this potential for improvement but may hesitate to embark on such initiatives. My role involves showcasing successful industry-wide practices in optimizing these "operations bookends" and demonstrating how these advancements can translate into success at their site. Ultimately, our goal is to empower clients to delight our clients and achieve operational excellence through a holistic approach to turnaround management.
