    M&A are fundamentally financial transactions. Aside from the headline-driven spike in share of voice, which is as fleeting as the ad campaigns our industry often produces, it's the consolidation of back office functions, offices, and other infrastructure that drives these decisions. At this scale, even cross-selling into clients is a moot point. Quality, creativity, agility, a personal touch... none of these were ever a factor. It's my opinion that the traditional holding company model is outdated, and that the agency of the future is a network of partnerships: with content creators, platforms, tech tools, celebrities, other agencies... If the holdcos are still growing, it's because they're buying agencies who understand this, but in so doing they're putting their thumbs on the scale in the wrong direction.

    With clients increasingly preferring smaller, more nimble shops, it’s curious that the big holding companies think “going bigger” is the right play. At this point, it feels like the only thing they have to offer is global reach. Are they missing the mark? To me, this shift seems more about cost savings (often at the expense of employees’ careers) than genuinely about better serving clients. In the process, they risk losing what clients actually value: agility, innovation, and a personalized approach. What do you think—is bigger really better? Or is it time for a different playbook?     Back in 2020, Zach Huntting, Mary W., Luis Antezana & a nimble subset of the #CROWN team started a creative staffing agency. Everyone was brought on as a W2 employee instead of 1099 so that they had unemployment coverage as well as access to our health insurance & 401k program. It was the beginning of the pandemic and we thought it was the right thing to do. We also paid our creatives the large majority of their bill rate, which is far higher than the industry average. That part wasn't an altruistic decision, it was a happy accident; we just didn't know any better. Four years later it's not only apparent that this model works; it's better for everyone: creatives are happier because they're valued and treated like humans, and clients get access to higher level talent for the same price. Inspired by our success, feedback from the creative community, and positive outcomes for our creatives and clients, as well as valuable guidance and mentorship from Kelly Tweeddale ACC, CEC, Steve Burke, David Lewis, SBA T.H.R.I.V.E. coaches & #Seattle cohort, late last year we brought on new talent to help us scale up and build a challenger brand in the staffing space. We launched with a new website this year and the response has been growing ever since. Q1 < Q2 < Q3 and it's looking like Q4 is going to outpace all of them combined! We are winning more work from existing clients and are proud to have added some fun new clients to the roster too! We are currently in the process of growing our business and challenging the status quo. Our agency is a local alternative to the Robert Halfs (Halves?) of the world. We punch above our weight and our value proposition is strong.
