The Federal Reserve cut rates by 25 basis points today, marking the year’s second reduction and bringing the target range down to 4.50%–4.75%. For context, this is the same level we last saw in February 2023. Here are five key takeaways from the Fed’s latest meeting: ? Jerome Powell stated that he feels the inflation recovery and labor market conditions have been mostly “remarkable” compared to our global peers. ? He also said that although “the economy and our policy are in a very good state,” he acknowledged risks—acting too quickly could reignite inflation while moving too slowly could weaken the labor market. The Fed intends to manage these risks while aiming to "maintain" economic strength. ? On policy, Powell noted, “We’re on a path towards a more neutral stance,” but clarified that while the Fed isn't planning a rate hike per se, they aren't ruling it out due to ongoing economic uncertainty, adding that they’re “in no rush” to stabilize the economy. ? When asked about the Fed’s independence from the newly elected government meaning if he could be fired, Powell firmly responded, “No” and emphasized, “It’s not permitted under the law” for the government to remove the chairman. ? Lastly, Powell empathized with those feeling the effects of inflation, explaining that the global pandemic caused significant disruption and that “it will take some years of real wage gains for people to feel better.” He highlighted that while progress is being made, it will take time before the public sees the full benefits.
