The 5th Black History Month Community Wellness Fair – Racism: A Public Health Issue will occur on February 26-27, 2025. This two-day event will explore the impact of racism on public health, focusing on systemic barriers and actionable solutions to advance health equity for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Day 1, on February 26, will be held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Glickman Family Library at the University of Southern Maine. Day 2 will occur at the Equality Community Center on February 27, from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. This event brings together healthcare experts, community advocates, and organizations that address health disparities. Participants can engage in meaningful discussions, learn from their experiences, and connect with others committed to creating systemic change. Last Thursday, CCCS co-founder and state representative Deqa Dhalac was honored with the 'Commitment to Service Award' in recognition of her work, not only with Maine’s immigrant community but for her unwavering commitment to the entire state. From her time as Mayor of South Portland—the first Muslim mayor in the United States—to her role as a state representative, Deqa has shown a steadfast dedication to serving her constituents every day. She was awarded by Claude Rwaganje of ProsperityME: The Center for Financial Education and Sherri Stevens of Hannaford Supermarkets

Congratulations to our very own Regina Phillips for being awarded the Champion for Older Adults award from the Southern Maine Agency On Aging It's just one example of how Cross Cultural Community Services is focused on advocating for older adults, specifically in our bipoc and LGBTQ+ communities.

Racial Definitions & Cultural Responsiveness Training with Cross Cultural Community Services When: November 14th, 9am-12pm ET Where: Virtual We will review: - the Zones of Comfort, Risk, and Danger to engage in a dialogue about participants and the discomfort some may feel when discussing race. - social and racial definitions such as microaggressions, bias, stereotypes, and systemic racism so everyone is aware of what we mean when we use these terms. - a short clip about discussing race and then divide the group into small groups to discuss their reactions. - the Continuum of cultural responsiveness, discuss cultural humility and explain why cultural awareness is instantaneous for people and organizations.
