Crop Convergence转å‘了
?? Yesterday we hosted the first #science club of #2025. ?? Kendra Armstrong of Crop Convergence presented the basics of #breedingprinciples and how #seed #selection affects #CEA #growing. ???? Kendra has a #PhD in #PlantBreeding, and has been working for 25+ years. She started with a wheelbarrow?at a #pioneer #station helping with #selection. Out of #gradschool she developed #decisionmaking #tools for #farmers and #breeding companies. ?? Kendra now teaches at University of California, Davis #PlantBreedingAcademy in addition to helping found Crop Convergence. ?? Today she discussed #varietyselection for #CEA, why it #differs, and what you might see from different companies taking her extremely #scientific background and condensing it down into layman's terms going through #breeding principles 101. ?? We reviewed the main stages of the #breedingcycle, discussing #socialtargeting and #demand #analysis and looking at what is?needed to produce in terms of #variety. ?? Kendra reviewed what questions are asked of clients to help create profiles. What is the #gap in the #market with a particular #variety? How do they #grow? What do I #need to grow? What do #customers need? What are #diseasepressures? ?? She explained that consultants take all this #information and set breeding #priorities and #objectives to create a #breedingprofile. ?? They then have to #regenerate new #variations within the #targetpopulation, a group of #plants like #tomatoes, they are all related and carry particular #traits such as #fruitshape & #size. They then create related lines to create #progeny that differ enough from parents to make #improvements. ?? Selection within #populations is made and requires a lot of #analytic review. Work is done to make better selections as #trials move forward. ?? Since there are so many #environments you are breeding for, you have to take an #average to do best in terms of #varieties. New varieties are then #released and #seedproduction is done #cyclical and #constantly. ? When a breeding company asks how a variety is going, what do you need from a variety, what are #goals? They are creating a #productprofile that #educates what #traits select for. ?? #Trials are conducted in #greenhouses owned by the company. You could be trialing 100-1,000 at a time. Based on what is #observed, the client will move forward and possibly trial at other greenhouses. They have an idea of how the #plant will trial but not exact #expectation for what the variety requires for the #recipe since #diversity in #leafygreens and #tomatoes is huge. ? It was great to get a basic understanding of Kendra's work. We look forward to the next #scienceclub where we will dive even further into this topic with #newperspectives next #quarter! ?? Listening to Farmers: How We’re Transforming Ag Data Analytics ?? Every innovation starts with a conversation. For us, it began with countless hours spent talking to farmers and stakeholders across the ag supply chain. We wanted to understand what really works in farming data analytics—and what doesn’t. Here’s what we heard loud and clear: ? Yield prediction is helpful, but context is everything. Farmers need more than numbers—they need insights. If yield predictions don’t explain why the results occurred or how to replicate (or avoid) them in the future, their value is limited. ? Data trust is paramount. Farmers see their data as part of their secret sauce, and they’re more likely to trust analytics companies that respect that by not combining data across farms. ? No more complicated software! The best solutions don’t require farmers to learn new platforms. Seamless integration is key to adoption and effectiveness. We’re using these insights to build tools that meet farmers where they are—practical, trustworthy, and actionable. Because when farmers succeed, the whole world benefits. Let’s keep the conversation going. How do you see data analytics evolving in agriculture? Share your thoughts below! ?? #AgTech #DataAnalytics #InnovationInFarming #SustainableAgriculture

Today someone said he liked working with Crop Convergence because we have a real, tested product. But ... our sales sucks ?? We took that as something of a compliment! We are taking the time to grow slowly and gain trust bit by bit. It's key to who we are. Key highlights from this article: 1.? ?Taking the time to gain farmer trust is key. Many farmers have been burned by tech and overhyped sales promises.? 2.? ?New technologies like ours provide the ability to run leaner and still turn a healthy profit are key in tough economic times. 3.? ?The tech that sticks around will be tools that deliver on their promises and follow through. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/gVF574Vq

Farmers are people too! ?? We make decisions based on our experiences, needs, and desires for the future. What a farmer grows, ?? where, and how much doesn't change that there is an emotional and needs-based decision approach. ?? ?Growing alongside and in a way that sustains our key resources - people, land, and water is key to a long-term view on farming. At Crop Convergence, we take the approach that a farmer needs to assess and understand how their decisions are affecting these three key resources. Rather than only go off of experience or limited trialing, we can help them identify the best options. This way they are more in control of the future outcomes and have less busy work.
