One of the pivotal Production companies I worked with in the early days of my career doesn’t exist today. Many of the top Production companies today, didn’t exist when I was coming up. You see, career growth opportunities come and go throughout our careers. The companies or artists that will be one of your pivotal career opportunities, may not even exist yet. What worked for me is focusing on my personal development, building relationships, and always bringing my best. I never worry about the positions I’m in, just focused on what I bring to it while it exists. Don’t over complicate it…????? Phase 1) Get some local experience. VIP, Merch, Stagehand, Runner, Security, Hospitality, Catering, Promoter Assist…10 shows, 20 shows, 3 months, 6 months, whatever. Phase 1a) Learn as much of that area as deeply as possible and connect/swap info with as many people in it as possible. Take note of ALL the vendors, companies, and freelancers that come through. Phase 1b) Let everyone know by your actions that you’re there to advance. Phase 2) Put it all together on a resume. List the company, not the shows you worked. Add a skills section and any training/education. And the most important part…put down contactable references that can confirm all the above. DONT make them ask for your references. Your references already approved. Phase 3) Research and reach out to the companies you took note of. If you have a referral, its like gold, use it wisely. Understand that your applying for growth and contribution, not for a gig. This is whats hirable. They can work with your minimal experience, but you can’t teach someone to want to show up for their future-selves. Phase 4) Do it again at the new level and shoot for the next. Commit to the company and team’s mission, not to the paycheck. It will show through in your work and rapport. Thats it. It’s a game of growth, contribution, and leverage at each level. This is it!” You think to yourself, “This guy is talking about exactly what I’d love to do.” So, you click the link in his bio and see he has career coaching and training… “…holy crap, if this is real and he can help me figure this thing out, I’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen.” So you decided right there that you are done wondering and joined his coaching group right then and there. You are so excited and hungry to learn that you dive into the training classes that are provided… You stayed up late and binge watched multiple trainings and read the guy’s books that night. The next day was your first coaching session. You were pumped up after the first session and knew EXACTLY what you needed to do next. It was time to get to work! ?????? You followed the steps of the training and coaching… Within DAYS, you were hired on with two stagehand companies… Within weeks, using the principles of the coach’s book, you became at the top of the call list. And within another month, you applied the strategies from the training, you were offered your first tour opportunity! ?? A month later, you move across the country to start your new journey as a Tour Manager for a dance company. You jump into the next session grateful, inspired, and just soaking in all the coaching….
