"Colon cancer is relatively common but tricky to detect; it can only be confirmed with a colonoscopy or surgery. Recently, an unexplained rise in colon cancer rates among younger people has increased the urgency to understand the disease better and find ways to prevent it. A new study highlights a promising clue: a bacterium typically found in the human mouth. Researchers discovered that a specific subtype within a subspecies of Fusobacterium nucleatum — a microbe associated with dental plaque and gingivitis — is linked to colon cancer growth and progression. According to the study’s authors, these findings could lead to better, noninvasive methods for colon cancer screening and inspire new therapies targeting these bacteria." ?
