Día de Muertos is a celebration rooted in the ancient traditions of the Nahua people of Mexico, reminding us to honor the departed by celebrating life. For thousands of years, the Toltecs, Aztecs, and other Nahua groups viewed death not as an end but as a part of the cycle of life. Mourning was seen as disrespectful, while joy, remembrance, and gratitude for life were encouraged. During Día de Muertos, it’s believed that the spirits of our loved ones return to Earth to celebrate beside us. We create altars, or ofrendas, in homes, businesses, and public spaces to welcome them back. Altars are decorated with items that were meaningful to the departed: water for the journey, favorite foods, and family photos. Trinkets and toys are placed for the little ones who have passed, and each departed soul is honored with a candle and Marigold flowers, symbolic guides for the spirits, are laid generously around the altar and worship area, their vibrant orange a beacon for those traveling from the spirit world. Traditionally, copal incense is burned to purify the space around the altar, creating a sacred energy that invites our ancestors to join us. Sugar skulls, adorned with bright colors and glittering details, represent individual souls, often decorated with joyful expressions to celebrate the departed’s life. Poems, writings, and even humorous stories are placed on the altar as a tribute to their memory and spirit. In towns and cities across Mexico, entire communities gather for festivities that overflow with color, music, and life. From local plazas to graveyards, people join in dance, song, and storytelling, adorned with elaborate skull makeup and vibrant costumes that embody the beauty of the spirit world. This energy is anything but mournful; it’s a powerful celebration of life and legacy, in tune with the ancient beliefs of the Nahuas. Día de Muertos is a feast for the senses, a vivid reminder of life’s beauty and the importance of connection across generations. Día de los Muertos is almost here and it is worth learning about. The Day of the Dead, or "Día de Muertos," is a beautiful tradition that perfectly embodies the celebration of life and death.
