?? Not all advice is good advice! ?? As a scrappy founder, you've probably come across a lot of mainstream advice that just doesn't feel right for your business. The truth is, sometimes the best thing you can do is trust your gut and stick to your lean approach. ?? Yesterday, we caught up with a friend who built an amazing AI-diagnostics company from the ground up. She didn’t raise any capital until they were generating significant revenue and even then it was a small amount. Eventually, she sold the company to a strategic buyer and had a phenomenal exit for herself and her early investors. Her journey inspired this post and reminded me of the power of staying true to your approach. Here are a few common pieces of advice that should raise some red flags: ?? "Raise as much as you can" ?? "Hire fast, scale fast" ?? "Spend big on marketing" ?? "Focus on hypergrowth over profitability" Efficiency, smart scaling, and thoughtful decision-making are your biggest assets. At Needed, we're not just talking about supporting working parents—we're living it. This year, 1 in 5 on our team will have a maternity leave. This includes both myself and Ryan Woodbury, my co-CEO and co-founder. We're tag-teaming our leave, with just a week to pass the baton as she returns and I step away. This hasn't hurt our?strong trajectory; in fact, our revenue has more than doubled since the beginning of this year. We've worked hard to support our team members during one of life's most transformative experiences. Needed offers 4 months of paid maternity leave, with additional unpaid time off available as needed. As founders, we are fully participating in this policy, with each of us taking 20 weeks of maternity leave this year. Most importantly, we actively encourage our team to do the same. ? As Ryan Woodbury and I learned through our previous maternity leaves, returning to work prematurely can take a major toll on maternal and infant health, including cognitive and mental health. In the US, one in 4 women return to work just 2 weeks after giving birth. At 2 weeks postpartum, many women are still bleeding and are in the early days of learning to feed their baby. Not to mention how to nourish their new postpartum selves. We need to do better as a society. As I prepare for my third maternity leave, I’m proud that Needed is in a position to be part of much-needed change. We are proudly mother founded, mother-led, and have a Board of Directors comprised entirely of mothers who’ve been there and get it. Our workplace culture includes Zoom calls sprinkled with baby cameos and calendar holds for pediatrician appointments and school pick ups. We've created an environment where the sounds of family life in the background aren't just tolerated—they're celebrated. As a company founded by mothers, for mothers, we are proving that empathy and flexibility aren't just nice-to-haves—they're competitive advantages.
