Transforming schools and classrooms through equitable grading

关于我们

At Crescendo Education Group, we believe that improving grading to be more equitable–more accurate, bias-resistant, and motivational–is one of the most underutilized, yet most powerful, levers to improve teaching and learning. Since 2014, we have supported thousands of educators in refining their grading and assessment practices through powerful professional learning experiences. Through our workshops, coaching, and other services, we provide educators and leaders with cutting-edge information, facilitate collaborative dialogue, and help prototype new ideas and practices. Our approach models the reflective and growth-oriented learning experiences we advocate for students. The work we do benefits students. External evaluations show that our professional development improves student achievement, reduces grade inflation, and decreases disparities in achievement and opportunity. Teachers also report enhanced relationships with students and reduced classroom stress, leading to better overall teaching and learning experiences. • ?#TBT to an amazing conversation with Brent Warner and Dr. Shantha Smith!? ?? Leveraging AI to Support Language Learners and Promote Equitable Grading AI is revolutionizing language education, giving students more opportunities to practice English beyond the classroom. In this must-watch interview, Brent Warner and Dr. Shantha Smith dive into how AI-powered tools can enhance learning while ensuring fair and equitable grading practices. Brent Warner’s advice to educators: "Explore the possibilities of AI to support language learners! Many students don’t have the chance to practice English outside of class, and AI can open new doors for them. And remember—be kind to yourself as you navigate this evolving technology. It may feel overwhelming, but the benefits for students are worth it!" ?? • Quick thoughts on the recent government statements on DEI work and how it relates to Grading for Equity (spoiler: it doesn't prohibit, & seems to actually support, Grading for Equity!)

Author and CEO, Crescendo Education Group

Acting Asst Sec of Office for Civil Rights for Dept of Ed wrote a "Dear Colleague" letter which outlined OCR's stance to limit "DEI" work. This letter does NOT in any way prohibit or even discourage Grading for Equity (or equitable grading). In fact, it suggests endorsement for how Grading for Equity improves grading. Grading for Equity makes grades more accurate, ensuring that grades reflect only what students have learned in a course, and not to reflect anything outside their control like family income, first language, race, etc. In other words, Grading for Equity is to grade entirely based on merit. I use the word "equity" because we have to be aware of students' different and unique circumstances, including their race/ethnicity, history, special needs, first language, family circumstances, etc., and how incorporation of those things outside their control (and other practices) can make our grades inaccurate and untrustworthy, so that we improve our grading to not reflect those things and to be more accurate. This is no shift from how I have always written about these practices, and our research over the last decade shows that equitable grading practices reduce grade inflation and improve grade accuracy for all students. I don't mind if people call this "accurate and fair grading" or "common sense grading", but it's ONLY by using these principles and practices of equitable grading that grades can be trusted to tell the truth about what students have learned. In the current political climate, people can misinterpret Grading for Equity as grading that gives preferences based on race or other circumstances. Grading for Equity is the opposite. When we define what equitable?grading is and what it isn't, then parents and families, and even those hostile to other applications of "equity", become supportive of Grading for Equity (sometimes to their own surprise), because everyone has an interest in students being graded accurately and consistently across teachers. I seldom invoke my law degree (NYU, '99) in my work, but with both a legal and education lens, NOTHING in OCR's Guidance or subsequent FAQ suggests that a school, district or college using Grading for Equity practices or its ideas would violate the current administration's interpretation of the relevant laws.
