One year ago, I lost my job. Losing your full-time job is one of those things you hear about but don’t really think will happen to you. And when it does, it’s a strange feeling – surreal but surprisingly okay. No one dies. You take a beat, regroup, and start mapping out what’s next. Looking back, though, there was one thing that made the transition so much smoother: investing in my personal brand. Over the years, I’d put in the time to build my own name in the creator economy – sharing my perspectives, building community, curating spaces for creators to connect. So when the ground fell out from under me, that brand was there to catch me. It didn’t just create opportunities; it gave me the confidence to say, “why not double down on what I’m building?” A "f*ck it" mindset, if you will. That’s exactly what I did, pouring myself into Creator Economy NYC. And, as if by design, this also led to my role at Kickstarter (shoutout to Jon Leland). “You can just do things.” That was the most liberating realization. One year later, I’m in a place I never expected – or could have predicted. Creator Economy NYC has grown from 800 to 5,000 members, and we’ve built a close-knit network of sponsors who are invested in supporting and growing this creator ecosystem. And next Monday, I’ll be hosting our 16th event of the year – this time, focused on personal branding. Our panel will feature four NYC creators who, like me, are building careers around their personal brands. Some of them, too, found their footing after being laid off. They’ve turned their unique experiences, perspectives, and daily life stories into full-time careers, and I can’t wait to learn from them and connect them with our community.
