What makes a good logo? 🤔 There are no hard and fast rules—what grabs one person’s attention might not work at all for the next person. But, there are a handful of proven design principles that can help lay down a strong foundation for your logo design. 💪 Logos are often your brand’s first impression, so you want them to be incredible! These five design principles are the building blocks for making that happen: ⚖️ Balance An off-kilter design can feel overwhelming, making it hard for the viewer to absorb the entire logo at once. Aim for good balance—nothing shifted too much to one side or the other—for a polished and harmonious design. 👯 Repetition Repetition might sound boring, but stay with us. Repetition might sound boring, but stay with us. 😜 Minor repetition (for example, the same text in different colors or shapes with slight variations) is key in making it easy for the viewer to scan, absorb, and remember your logo. 🎨 Contrast Opposites attract, especially in good logo design! Putting two opposing elements together helps your logo stand out, grabbing the viewer’s attention. It’s pretty common to use contrasting colors in logos, but you can also create contrast with lines and shapes. ⚡ Dominance Dominance is when one of your visual elements is more prominent than the others. This is an effective strategy for drawing the viewer’s eye to one particular area—the focal point of your logo. It can also make your design feel more dynamic! 👑 Hierarchy Visual hierarchy is the principle of structuring visual elements in a way that intentionally guides the viewer’s eye through your design. The previous four design principles all work together to make this happen, as do elements like framing, typography, and color choice. The principles of good logo design might seem simple, but creating a great logo from scratch is no small feat!
