Now Is the Time for Creative Voices to Rise By Jason Steer, Executive Director, Creative Alliance ? It’s only been a year since I stepped into my role at Creative Alliance, but in that short time, the work I’ve witnessed—bold, urgent, transformative—has convinced me of one thing: the time for creative voices is now. ? In a world that feels increasingly fractured by fear, suspicion, and division, artists are doing what they’ve always done—reflecting truth, stirring empathy, and offering hope. Right here in Baltimore, our artists aren’t whispering in the wings. They’re taking center stage, ready to be heard. ? Take “In the Wake of: Resilience and Revolution”, opening this Friday, March 28th. This powerful exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the Baltimore Uprising. But it’s not just about memory—it’s about movement. Through provocative and vulnerable works, the artists explore the intersections of social unrest and creative resistance. It’s an invitation to reflect, to reckon, and ultimately, to rise together. ? Consider “Kith and Kin: A Rewilding of Sound and Form” by Melissa Foss, currently on display in our main gallery through April 18. Her immersive soundscape, a healing blend of tone and texture, offers quiet in the chaos. It’s not just an exhibit—it’s a balm. I’ve walked through her work and felt my pulse slow. It’s the kind of experience we need more of right now: art that grounds us. ? If visual contemplation isn’t your rhythm, this March also delivers?sonic fire. ? On March 28th, Haitian powerhouse?Moonlight Benjamin?hits our stage. Her music is a spiritual charge—a fusion of rock and Caribbean Vodou blues—that speaks to the resilience of a people and raw truth. She doesn’t perform—she conjures.? And just when you think you’ve caught your breath,?Bia Ferreira?arrives.?Bia is a Brazilian dynamo who fuses funk, reggae, and folk into protest anthems that pulse with joy and justice. Singing in Portuguese, she tackles racism, feminism, and queer identity with?tenderness and grit. You don’t have to understand every word to feel every beat. Trust me – your playlist will thank you. ? These performances do more than entertain. They give a platform to voices often ignored or silenced—voices from communities targeted by discrimination and neglect. Their music isn’t just art. It’s resistance. And it’s beautiful. ? And because joy is just as radical as protest, we’re bringing the community together for one of my new favorite Creative Alliance traditions,?The BIG Baltimore Kite Fest?in Patterson Park! As kites of every color fill the sky and families gather to welcome spring, we are reminded of something essential—our shared humanity.?The sky belongs to all of us. ? See you in the gallery. See you at the show. See you in the sky. ? —Jason

"On loan from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum,?I’ve Endured?is named after the song by Ola Belle Reed, a North Carolina musician whose timeless croon and poignant ballads defined mountain music. Each panel in the exhibit highlights the roles women play as performers, cultural memory keepers, and innovators, while pushing back against the male-dominated narratives that often overshadow their impact." "This conversation is especially relevant today, when the national dialogue about the origins of Americana music is up for review. (Look no further than Beyoncé’s?Country Music Award snub?in 2024, which invited long-overdue reflection on the erasure of country music’s earliest contributors.)" –Megan DeMatteo for Baltimore magazine READ MORE and make sure to get your tickets for this weekend's Say, Sister!
