    Pattern matching. Turns out even the cells in our body are built to recognize patterns (according to a new study found on Nature.com). I think as marketers we tend pattern match often. If a strategy worked for us in the past, it's probably going to work again in the future - right? But have you ever been surprised by the types of customers who purchase from you? Or have you ever been shocked that a good ad didn't work or a bad ad did work? Damian Dayton, our Chief Creative Officer talks about 'survivorship bias' in marketing. It's the idea that you can get stuck in a rut by being too narrowly focused on a particular audience, customer cohort or 'pattern'. In Damian's words, "There are millions of people in America that you've made too many assumptions about that might be consumers of your product." We recently worked with a brand that saw some early success by leaning in to messaging centered around solving a particular pain point for their customers. By doing so, they invested heavily into creatives and audiences central to that product feature. Turns out, that pain point was likely not the primary reason someone would buy their product. In fact, there were many indicators that their most valuable customers were actually people who had never even experienced that same pain. The best remedy to this? A strategy session with Creatably. The second best remedy to this? Talk to your customers. Find out WHY they bought - not just what ad they saw before they purchased.

    The flip side of the coin. I know I sad that man cannot live by Amazon alone, but if you are building a brand OFF Amazon, someone is picking up your table scraps on Amazon. They are owning your branded search and selling an inferior product. If your brand is growing, you need to seriously consider being on Amazon as well. If they are searching for your brand, they are searching on Amazon. The biggest change in eCom strategy that I have seen in the past 2 years is that brands HAVE TO move to Omnichannel as soon as possible. You can't be JUST on Shopify or JUST on Amazon.
