Empowering community voices to implement climate solutions that bring about unity and resilience

关于我们

Climate Resilient Communities (CRC) is a community-based organization dedicated to serving the underrepresented through empowering community voices to implement climate solutions that bring about unity and resilience. In the Bay Area, as throughout the world, under-resourced communities are disproportionately vulnerable to climate change impacts. Since 2016, CRC has been on the ground learning the specific needs of residents in diverse, under-resourced communities in East Palo Alto, Belle Haven (Menlo Park), and most recently North Fair Oaks. CRC's work is comprised of 3 core areas: Community-Based Adaptation Planning, building Resilient Homes and carrying out Climate Action Education. CRC community-based adaptation planning focuses on creating feasible programs that address community priorities to respond to climate change events (wildfire smoke, extreme heat, etc.) and sea-level rise. CRC is currently working with and managing the North Fair Oaks Climate Ready Team and the East Palo Alto Climate Change Community Team. With community-based adaptation the CRC takes a city-wide focus on adaptation and resilience planning. CRC’s Resilient Homes focuses on the individual rather than citywide action. Since 2016, CRC has been working with many organizations to enroll eligible low-income homeowners in EPA and Belle Haven in free solar, home repair, and weatherization programs funded by the State of California. In 2019, CRC, as an Acterra program, partnered with Oxford Day Academy, Green Ninja project, San Mateo County’s YESS program, Grassroots Ecology, and Stanford to pilot the Earthwise Kids program. The goal of the Climate Action Education program is to build on existing programs to provide more opportunities for youth engagement and training for youth and their families.

  • In collaboration with our EPA CCCT, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, & Menlo Park Fire Protection District, we held a disaster preparedness workshop in East Palo Alto. With over 60 attendees, we?offered families emergency kits and crank radios to take home. MPFPD’s Michael Taylor led a session on disaster preparedness and cybersecurity. The event also provided language equity with headsets for Spanish and English speakers. Shout out to our Resilient Readiness Program Manager, Chase Donnell, for leading this event! We look forward to hosting more in our communities.

Good news: Peninsula Clean Energy is funding 16 local nonprofits to fight climate change with us through our community outreach grant program! These wonderful organizations help us inform and *listen* to our customers... in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog. Together, we can make climate action accessible to everyone. For example, tonight our staff is partnering with grantee Climate Resilient Communities to co-facilitate a bilingual workshop (English/Spanish) to get community feedback on making our #ebike instant rebate program more accessible to all residents. That's putting the community in Community Choice Energy. Huge kudos to Vanessa Shin for managing this project! #climatejustice #environmentaljustice #energyequity

The Sophomore Public Service Immersion (PSI) Program had its very first trek to engage with Bay Area community partners this past Saturday! Students in the program went to East Palo Alto to help install a rain garden in a private home, led by Course Instructor Reza Rezvani, Public Service Immersion Coordinator Canon Pham, and Climate Resilient Communities’ Director of Programs Cade Cannedy. The activity was part of a broader project designed by?Climate Resilient Communities,?Fresh Approach, and?Grassroots Ecology?where rain gardens and cisterns are installed in private residences throughout East Palo Alto to help mitigate flooding, drought, extreme heat, and other climate change impacts. PSI is a brand new program that students can sign up for as a course (UAR 85) or participate in for no credit. Designed for sophomore students who may have little or no exposure to service, the interactive program helps them to understand the principles and pathways of ethical and effective service through interacting with community partners throughout the Bay Area. The program is coordinated by Reza Rezvani (the program director for student outreach and engagement at?the Haas Center) and Canon Pham, who helps plan and lead treks and facilitate weekly sessions in addition to being a resource for her peers.
