    After nearly three decades of dedicated service at Cranbrook Institute of Science, I am preparing to embark on the next chapter of my journey and will be retiring on June 30, 2025. This decision is made with deep gratitude, nostalgia, and pride as I reflect on the privilege of serving as the Susan Flint Cooper Director of this remarkable institution. When I joined the Institute in 1996 as Curator of Anthropology, I could not have imagined the profound experiences and relationships that would shape my career. Every step of this journey has been a true honor. One of my proudest achievements during my time at the Institute has been establishing the Institute’s Freshwater Forum, which unites experts, advocates, and community members across Michigan to play a role in addressing critical Great Lakes issues. Through the Forum, initiatives like 'Water on the Go!' and other educational and community programs have inspired more than 500,000 individuals to become environmental stewards! The passion and dedication of everyone involved in the Freshwater Forum have demonstrated the remarkable outcomes we can achieve when we are united by a common cause. This spirit of collaboration has made our work through the initiative both impactful and transformative. With that, I am deeply honored and profoundly grateful to announce the creation of the Michael D. Stafford Freshwater Forum Fund. This generous gesture by the Institute and the Cranbrook Educational Community holds immense personal significance, ensuring that the work initiated through the Freshwater Forum will continue to inspire and unite future generations. Knowing that this legacy will live on is truly humbling, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who made this possible.
