Unwanted adjustments create possibilities. Usually around this time, I'm planting veggies, fruit, and herbs in a ridiculous number of garden beds. It's hard work but brings me so much joy. But not this year. My garden beds were torn down. The ground has tarps all over it to kill as many weeds as possible. I have to wait until next year before I get to do anything in my garden. Beside that, my body couldn't do what I've done before. So, what's a rabid gardener to do in the face of an unwanted situation? Well, I figured out what I could do given the realities of the situation. I decided to put some new metal beds on my back porch and garden as much as I can there. I don't have as much space. The porch doesn't get as much sun. But it's something more than nothing. Plus, it's making me get creative. When I had optimal conditions, I had just done a little interplanting, that is, mixing different types of crops together for mutual benefit. Now I'm forced to go all in and try something a more integrative approach! This bed has broccoli, cauliflower, onions, beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, herbs, and flowers. Same thing I'd suggest if things change in your market or your consulting business. Don't quit or try to force what no longer works. Adapt. Innovate. Work the solution! It may not be everything you want, but it keeps you in the game and doing enough of what you are meant to do.
