CPJ calls on #Israel to end its sanctions against Israel’s Haaretz newspaper — the latest in the government’s efforts to stifle independent reporting of its war in Gaza. On Nov. 24, Israel’s government unanimously approved a proposal to cease all government advertising and communications with Israel’s oldest print newspaper. “We deplore the Israeli government’s attempt to silence a respected Israeli outlet like Haaretz by hurting their advertising and subscription revenue,” said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg. “Israel’s increasing deployment of restrictions on critical media is further disturbing evidence of its efforts to prevent coverage of its actions in Gaza.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7cYZMuh ??: AP/Ohad Zwigenberg

An independent media is vital for democracy. In a year in which voters in many countries are going to the polls, independent information about the candidates and their campaigns is essential for voters. A world without journalism is a world without truth. #JournalismMatters.

Politicians around the country have grown more outwardly hostile toward the media, employing anti-journalist rhetoric, limiting access to government proceedings, and using the courts as a means of retaliation in the face of unfavorable coverage. Fighting these lawsuits can have potentially devastating financial implications, even bankrupting local outlets with fewer resources. Politicizing and denigrating journalists, rather than respecting their watchdog role as the Fourth Estate, has a profound impact on democratic institutions and curtails the public’s ability to stay informed through trusted sources. In an op-ed with The New Arab, CPJ’s CEO Jodie Ginsberg highlights Israel’s established pattern of discrediting Palestinian journalists with unsubstantiated “terrorist” labels, and says Israel’s attacks on the media must end. “It is vital that [journalists] be allowed to perform that act of witnessing and that we, as outside witnesses ourselves to these systematic attacks, play our part by speaking out loudly and clearly in their defence.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eHGDpxNx ??: Getty

It was such an honor presenting Perrine Daubas with the Committee to Protect Journalists Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award in memory of her beloved husband Christophe Deloire last night. Christophe was just 53 years old. He had so much to give. So many more battles to fight against the authoritarian governments and heedless tech corporations that he saw as threatening journalism and constricting and polluting the flow of reliable information. I had the honor to partner with Christophe and his team in developing our United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity. Christophe loved big ideas. He understood how information could be used to enslave or liberate, how authoritarians censored and algorithms distorted reality. He set up the Forum on Information and Democracy, to fight against disinformation, and ensure the economic sustainability of journalism, and promote the diversity of ideas, information and media pluralism. His death came far too soon and robbed us of a true champion for independent journalists. His legacy, however, will live on. https://lnkd.in/dHa7_tKm
