Thank you Alison Elliott, Claire Dépit-Str?mb?ck & LEAN Energy US for hosting an incredible national conference on Community Power! Our NH contingent - Sen. Perkins Kwoka, CPCNH Chair C. Below, Vice Chair L. Sweet, Treasurer Kim Quirk, CEO B. Callnan, C. Willing, D. Dennis - was able to connect w/ & learn from so many fantastic energy leaders. We are grateful to have had the chance to share our story as the most recent state Community Power market to launch this new paradigm revolutionizing 21st century energy solutions from the bottom up.
Some highlights we're taking away:
-In OH, SOPEC — Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council is enabling dozens of communities to go 100% renewable AND save millions of $; securing millions of $ in federal grants for EV charging; and in the City of Athens, which passed a carbon fee by 76% of voters, investing revenues into local solar. Great work M. Roberts, L. Sulfridge, team
-In CA, CCA serves 26% of the electric market; there are 25 CCAs serving 216 localities & 14 million people; they've built 14,000 MEGAWATTS of new renewables + storage and are leaders in virtual power plants, equipping customers w/ DERs to shape-shift load. Shout out to S. Marshall, B. Vaughan, K. Burns, J. Mosca, & co.
-MA led the nation as the 1st Community Power state, with programs now covering ~half the state. NY's market is more recent and has lots of potential for exciting innovation. Kudos to P. Gromer in MA & M. Gordon in NY, and their teams for their leadership in those states & at LEAN nation-wide
-Champions are standing up CCA markets in new states: Virginia; D. Rowan in Pennsylvania; Montgomery Co. in Maryland
-Calpine Energy Solutions, LLC! Mission Data! River City Bank!
2 of my favorite moments: 1) the panel reunion of two titans of power market design, Audrey Zibelman & Clifton Below. When the Seabrook Nuke Station build was bankrupting NH's utility in the 90s, these two teamed up to break up the monopoly and build a market, Clif as a legislator crafting the nation's 1st Utility Restructuring Act, Audrey as General Counsel for NHPUC. Audrey has since designed power markets in three *eh-hem* *two* ?? hemispheres leading NY, PJM, & Australian Energy Market Operator (where 1 in 3 customers have solar!!). Reunited this week, they articulated a vision for new localized competitive power markets, customers & communities empowered w/ data + price signals to generate wealth from local RE and tech. 2) Sen. Perkins Kwoka's keynote: "We are in the presence of big thinkers, global change makers, a generational shift..." She challenged us all to rise to the occasion, become partners to our ecosystems of energy companies, & live up to the weighty responsibility of these new markets.
Finally, thank you to the US agency staff for your invaluable insights - Rose Dady, Chris Castro, Elizabeth Wolfe, Shawn Bennett, Emily Doran, Sushmita Jena, et al. It is heartening to know we have good partners, from local towns all the way up thru US DOE.
