During times of grief, fear, and rage, poetry and art often become a source of medicine that nourishes and fortifies our souls. This evergreen, timely poem and offering written by CompassPoint's very own Laura Eberly paints a picture of a world we can co-create, together. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/dn_KaW_p The First Week: A Poem by Laura Eberly If we all agreed to, on Monday ???we could plant a pollinator garden on every corner ???and turn over one parking spot per block ???to vegetables and fruit. But first, on Sunday ???we should assemble all the healers— ???all the yogis, chiropractors, sangomas, and sage smudgers— ???and ask them to have coffee with the matriarchs, ???and the refugees, ???and the trans sex workers, ???and the small town queers, ???and anybody who has yelled at a marble building through a bullhorn, ???or raised a child in times of war, ???and by lunchtime all of us would learn ???to locate, heal, and fortify our spines. That evening, ???the musicians would find our diaphragms ???and teach us new songs ???to sing while planting. On Tuesday after the gardens, ???we would repair every roof, ???install rain barrels and solar panels, ???retrieve the lost balls and frisbees and kites, ???and remember that we are tiny beneath the sky. On Wednesday, ???we'd fix the heaters ???so the gas could never be cut off, ???and install a tiny lead filter in every faucet. By Thursday, ???we would know each others’ names ???and begin to tell our stories. ???Then ???the farmers and the roofers and the plumbers ???would be honored by the doctors and the lawyers, ???who had spent their first week ever listening. ???Next, venerations and reparations ???from the bankers and professors, ???who will learn that education isn’t learning ???and money isn’t value ???and nothing is the feel of soil in your hands ???or throwing back your head to sing. ???We will ache for love and owning nothing ???and for the first time ???that will make us unafraid. By Friday, ???we will be too busy ???healing, tending, and child-rearing ???for waging war, ???so the soldiers will have no orders. ???The police will have quiet radios and no calls, ???so we will tear apart the prisons ???and send the guards to rehab, ???where first-graders and nursery workers will teach them slowly ???to trust humanity again, ???beginning with their own. ???We will use the bricks and fences ???to build community centers with wide porches ???where the grannies can knit and keep watch instead. Saturday would be for rest: ???hammocks, ???creeks, ???and lemonade. ???We would listen to the earth ???and the spirits ???and our ancestors ???and our lovers ???and our beloveds ???and the bullfrogs ???and the songbirds ???and the tall grass ???and the redwoods ???and the oak trees breathing ???for one day ???every week. ???Breathing. And by next Sunday, ???we would know who else we need.

Our latest learning series, 'How You Be?' Radical Visioning as Black Leaders, is 2 weeks away! Learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/dkbDrSBG Kicking off Friday, November 15th, this learning series provides the time, spaciousness, peer support, and resources for Black people in leadership to grow their creativity and vision in order to reground in their purpose and increase their transformative impact on the organizations, communities, and movements they lead. Meet the brilliant team behind our newest program offering for Black leaders: spring opara, Program Lead spring is a Project Director and “Yelder” (youthful elder) at?CompassPoint. In her time at?CompassPoint, spring has pursued her life’s purpose—deconstructing and dismantling white supremacy through a self-care lens and centering self-care as a radical act of liberation for our most marginalized communities. She co-created a leading edge health, wellness, and self-care curriculum for Black women in leadership, which she delivers for?CompassPoint?through our public workshops and cohort leadership programming. spring draws from African Spiritual Practices and has immersed herself in understanding how to implement Indigenous ways of being into today’s movement landscape in order to dismantle systems of oppression. Maryssa Hall, Co-Facilitator Maryssa brings her experience as a capacity builder and community organizer to her role as Project Director at?CompassPoint. She envisions a world of collective liberation—where Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), womxn, trans folx and those outside of the gender binary, Queer people, people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, working people, and immigrants are free from oppression, can thrive as their full authentic selves, and create transformative change in their communities. Their approach is rooted in Black Queer Feminist thought and they employ an intersectional and transformative justice lens in their work. As a life-long learner (and unlearner) ella’s greatest lessons have come from working in and with community outside of formal academic environments. Kyla Hartsfield, Co-Facilitator Kyla is a Project Director at?CompassPoint?and a Southern Black Queer woman who hails from North Carolina. Kyla has six years of experience organizing around prison/police abolition, climate change, and ending gender-based violence. She uses the lens of abolition and anti-capitalism to fight and dream of a new world. Kyla is extremely passionate about creating safe spaces for Black people, learning and teaching conflict resolution, as well as creating and tending to the community. She leaves you with her favorite quote from Arundhati Roy: “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”
