Local Machine Shop Named Michigan Manufacturer of the Year Traverse City, MI – The Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA) has chosen a Traverse City business as the state’s top small shop. This year’s best-of-the-best MMA’s Manufacturing Excellence Award goes to Cox Machine LLC. “It’s an incredible honor,” Nathan Cox, company owner said. “The award is based on our commitment to a healthy workplace and an emphasis on social responsibility. Alongside our technical expertise, those two factors explain our success. We prioritize our people and our impact on the community and environment.” With just 17 employees, Cox Machine is far smaller than most shops competing in MMA’s small tier (under 200 employee) category, but the company has an impressive list of clients in the aerospace, defense, and oil & gas industries. “A lot of our work is in making one-of-a-kind prototype manufacturing runs. That requires having a lot of technical skill and patience,” Cox said. “We very seldom make orders of 1,000 pieces. What we make is all about quality. Our successes show that it’s ok to have just a handful of dedicated employees who have the patience and skill for these low-volume but highly demanding projects.” Cox said one of the advantages of keeping the operation small is that when he’s not on the phone to customers, he spends his time on the shop floor. “That’s where I belong,” he said. “I can help solve problems that might pop up and help teach our employees with a hands on approach.”
