Coworking community, our Ukrainian friend Helga Moreno needs us !! Last week, we were hugging Helga goodbye in Sofia. A few hours later, Helga was hit back by Ukraine's harsh war time reality. Thom W., from StartDock Amsterdam, explains the situation perfectly in this post, we are taking over in extenso : "It's my first illegal thing that I did in this life." These are the haunting words of Helga Moreno, a courageous Ukrainian mother I first met a couple of years ago at the Coworking Europe Conference. Last week we spoke on the conference again in Sofia. The week after I saw a devastating LinkedIn post from Helga and today, after a Google Meet call with Helga, I decided to turn my worries into action. Helga’s son Vlad -a young soldier- was fighting not just for his country but for his life at a training camp in Ukraine to serve, in an unfair war. The army lacks resources, medicines and doctors. For weeks, Vlad endured severe pneumonia, kidney infections, and a host of other life-threatening conditions in an environment devoid of basic human needs—no heating, no sanitation, no proper medical care. Only paracetamol and just one doctor on many batallions of soldiers. When Helga realized the system would not save him, she took matters into her own hands. In an act of sheer desperation and love, she crossed borders, fought through bureaucracy, and "kidnapped" her son to get him the medical help he urgently needed in a private hospital, that she can't afford. Today, Helga and her son face a new threat: one of imprisonment and persecution for her actions. Helga refuses to stay silent and has brought her son to a private hospital to give him the medical care he needs to survive. He is in total fear. The care costs her €600/day and today in a Google Meet call she told me that she had sold her car (quick, so for too little money) in order to pay these bills. I, Thom, started a crowdfunding campaign to support Helga, her son, and hopefully the Ukrainian military with awareness that all help is much needed! Medicines, doctors, knowledge, expertise, everything is welcome. They have too little resources. They sleep in tents! This is not just about Helga or her son. It’s about the countless lives being lost due to a lack of medicines, doctors and resources. I don’t usually like conferences or networking events, but thanks to Jean-Yves Huwart and the Coworking Europe conference I had the chance to hang out with the founders of two of our strongest direct competitors at OneCoWork - Flexible Workspaces : Monday Working Spaces by Urbania and Cloudworks | Coworking & flexible offices Having the chance to spend time and laugh with Sergi Tarragona Fenosa & Xavi Bassons showed me that competitors don’t have to be enemies - even if we sometimes fight for the same clients or locations, there’s a lot to learn from eachother and room to grow for each player. P.s great job on a great event Jean-Yves Huwart, interesting content and it’s incredible to see how much more advanced the industry has become since the last time I attended in 2017.

Last night, we from WorkBetter hosted the afterparty of Coworking Europe 24 and it was a truly magical night! ?? We had over 250 people from the industry from all around the world at FeelBetter Bar&Snack. Together we spend the night having great conversations, drinking and dancing….a lot! ?? Great first day at Coworking Europe 2024! The Shared Access team enjoyed panel sessions including Elena Monserrate Diez (she/her) Uncommon talking about the implementation of hospitality values into the coworking sector followed by an interesting talk by Jesse Derkx CBRE launching their new data driven platform that matches occupiers with flexspace operators. Sam Jackman also led a collaborative session with technologywithin discussing the importance of in-building connectivity for operators and members. Looking forward to day two! #coworkingeurope
