"Space, once considered the final frontier, is now the critical enabler of India’s defence," said Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, at the launch of 'Antariksha Abhyas – 2024.' This first-of-its-kind exercise, led by the Defence Space Agency, brings together the Armed Forces, ISRO, DRDO, and other experts to enhance India's space-based defence capabilities. As space becomes more "congested, contested, and competitive," this initiative aims to secure national interests by identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening operational readiness. #india #defence #anilchauhan #military #spacewarfare #security #spacerace #spaceexercise

“Wood may seem like an ancient technology,” says Takao Doi, astronaut and special professor at Kyoto University, “but it is also cutting-edge as we look to extend human presence to the Moon and Mars.” Japan made a groundbreaking feat in space exploration by launching LignoSat, the world’s first wooden satellite. A collaboration between Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry symbolises space sustainability by addressing the growing issue of space debris. Launched on November 5, 2024, aboard a SpaceX rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, it will orbit the Earth for six months. Its mission is to operate as a functional satellite and test the durability of timber in the harsh conditions of space. Designed to decompose safely upon re-entry, LignoSat pioneers the use of eco-friendly materials in orbital technology. This starkly contrasts traditional metal satellites, which often generate oxide particles upon re-entry, posing risks to the environment and potentially interfering with telecommunications. Each side of the compact, box-like LignoSat measures 10 centimetres and has been crafted using a traditional Japanese wood-joining technique, which eliminates the need for screws or adhesives. This construction reflects centuries-old craftsmanship, adapted for one of humanity’s newest frontiers. Gaganyaan is an important mission that will mark India’s journey in human space flight. This is the first manned mission, which is set to add India to the elite group of countries that have sent humans for space exploration. It represents India’s diplomacy and technological superiority, which are directly linked to India’s hard and soft power in space technology. The mission has brought together expertise from many space countries and organisations such as NASA, Roscosmos, CNES, ESA and Axiom Space. Authored by Mukund for Covering MEA and COVERING ISRO. On October 22, 2008, India made a giant leap in space exploration with the launch of Chandrayaan-1, marking the beginning of its historic journey to the Moon. On November 8, 2008, the spacecraft successfully entered lunar orbit, signaling India’s arrival on the global space stage. A pivotal moment came on November 14, 2008, when the Moon Impact Probe (MIP), carrying the Indian national flag, detached from Chandrayaan-1 and crash-landed near the lunar south pole. Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, received the prestigious IAF World Space Award on October 14, 2024, in recognition of the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The award, presented by the International Astronautical Federation, was given during a ceremony in Milan, Italy. This award highlights India's growing significance in the global space community and celebrates its landmark achievement in lunar exploration. Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing near the Moon's south pole on August 23, 2023, made India the first nation to accomplish this feat. The mission, under Dr. Somanath's leadership, demonstrated India's space capabilities and provided crucial scientific data. Chandrayaan-3's success has elevated India's status in space exploration and inspired future generations of engineers and scientists. Authored by Jaypal Kalra for the Covering ISRO. For its 5th Starship Test Flight on October 13, 2024, SpaceX returned the rocket's first stage booster back to its Texas launch pad for the first time. With this, SpaceX's bid to build a reusable Moon and Mars Vehicle, has achieved another novel engineering feat. The liftoff took place at 12:25 PM GMT, from SpaceX's Boca Chica, Texas launch facilities, as the first stage "Super Heavy" booster launched carrying the Starship second stage rocket into space before separating at an altitude of about 70 km to begin its return to land. It aimed at reaching the launch tower it had launched off from as it landed. The tower is fitted with two large metal arms. This is the latest advancement by SpaceX in its test-to-failure development campaign for a rocket meant to be fully reusable for lifting more cargo into orbit, ferrying humans to the moon, and eventually reaching Mars. Auroras, the vivid and the vibrant light display caused by interactions between solar particles and Earth's atmosphere. This scientific phenomenon, occurs at higher altitudes, as the excited atomic oxygen emits rare red light, while at lower altitudes, it produces more common green light due to higher oxygen concentration. Ionized molecular nitrogen at altitudes around 96.6 km (60 miles) creates purple and blue hues, particularly during intense solar activity. These interactions result in the stunning colors of the aurora, revealing the dynamic relationship between Earth's atmosphere and solar energy. On October 3, 2024, Skyroot Aerospace successfully tested and qualified the Reaction Control System (RCS) for its Vikram-1 rocket. This system, designed to enable in-flight trajectory corrections and adjustments, was fired in pairs to test positive and negative rolls using four Raman Engines. During the test, the RCS executed a total of 65 pulses, with each pulse lasting between 60 and 1,200 milliseconds. This validation of the avionics and propulsion systems on the RCS module marks a crucial milestone in preparing Vikram-1 for its maiden orbital flight. Authored by Jaypal Kalra for the Covering ISRO.
