Tonight is the night! Rain is expected in over half of the 17 cities where Covenant House International will be Sleeping Out tonight.? It is going to be wet!? Last night in Anchorage it was ZERO degrees! ?A ?harsh reminder of the additional challenges young people face on a daily basis.??How can I stay dry, stay safe, charge my phone, clean up, secure my belongings, find something to eat, afford transportation, and make it on time for my job interview at 9 am?!? ? A young woman once shared with me her story of barricading herself in a filthy, smelly subway bathroom one rainy night in NY, before an interview the next morning, just so she had access to a sink to be able to get herself ready presentable... and was able to jump a train to the interview.? And she got the job!?? The drive, resilience and ingenuity of the young people experiencing homelessness never ceases to amaze me.? Just imagine what they can do with even basic needs being met!? Despite having to see the worst imaginable circumstances experienced by young people on a daily basis, working at Covenant House is a constant source of joy and optimism for me… to get to see so many young people overcome, and to go on to do great things (or even just live independently), when no one in society expects them to succeed.??It is amazing! I cant think of a better investment than the young people who have the chance to do great things, if we just give them the chance! https://lnkd.in/gA7bVAPg

We estimate that more than 12,000 young people will experience homelessness this year in Chicago alone. At Covenant House, we stand firm in the belief that no youth should ever have to endure the devastation of homelessness. We continue to keep our doors open 24/7, 365 days a year, working to end the cycle of homelessness. But we can't do it alone. Since arriving at CHIL, she’s been working hard—balancing a job at UIC, returning to school, and even working on an indie film! ???? Her goal? To create a successful, fulfilling life in a field she loves. We’re honored that Covenant House Illinois was chosen to host yesterday's press conference announcing Chicago’s $15 million award from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program! This funding is a monumental step toward ending youth homelessness in our communities, and we’re especially proud of the Youth Action Board and all the young voices who contributed to this initiative. Together with All Chicago Making Homelessness History and the Chicago Continuum of Care and other partners, we’re building a future of hope and support for young Chicagoans. ????
