When child support is received consistently, it can help CPs gain financial independence and reduce the need to return to a potentially unsafe situation. Understanding this connection highlights the importance of accessible child support for families. #DomesticViolenceAwareness #FamilySafety
Did you know that, according to the Office of Family Violence Prevention and Services (OFVPS), almost 40% of the custodial parents with cases in the Title IV-D child support program have experienced domestic violence with the other parent on their child support cases? Similarly, 1 in 4 noncustodial parents may have domestic violence during their lifetimes. Financial dependence is one of the main reasons many parents return to their abusive partner. When child support is received consistently, it can be a primary source of income for custodial families. his emphasizes that the child support program plays a key role in helping survivors leave abusive relationships and that child support agencies should prioritize the establishment and implementation of policies that protect victims of domestic violence. Oftentimes, child support meant for children never reaches them- it’s kept by the government to repay TANF benefits. Research shows that when families receive full child support, they gain financial stability, noncustodial parents contribute more consistently, and child welfare involvement decreases. Illinois became the first state to pass through 100% of child support to families, and Maryland now has the opportunity to do the same with SB 703.
