This week, the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff celebrated International Women’s Day and the many women who work to protect our public safety! The event highlighted the agency's participation in the “30x30 Pledge," an initiative dedicated to increasing the representation of women in law enforcement agencies across the nation to 30% by 2030. Law enforcement has traditionally been an extremely male-dominated field, but research supporting this initiative shows increasing female representation can improve outcomes and the quality of services for the community. The County of Santa Clara is located at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay and encompasses 1,312 square miles. It has one of the highest median family incomes in the country, and a wide diversity of cultures, backgrounds and talents. The County of Santa Clara continues to attract people from all over the world. With more than 70 agencies/departments and 22,000 employees, the County of Santa Clara plans for the needs of a dynamic community, provides quality services, and promotes a healthy, safe and prosperous community for all. The County provides essential services including public health protection, environmental protection, medical services through Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), child and adult protection services, homelessness prevention and solutions, roads, park services, libraries, emergency response to disasters, protection of minority communities and those under threat, access to a fair criminal justice system, and scores of other services, particularly for those members of our community in the greatest need. The County's population of nearly 1.9 million is one of the largest in the state, and the largest of the nine Bay Area counties. Its population constitutes about one fourth of the Bay Area's total population. There are 15 cities including Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale ranging from Palo Alto to the north, to Gilroy in the south. San Jose is the largest city in the County, with a population of 1.035 million, and is the administrative site of County Government. A significant portion of the county's land area is unincorporated ranch and farmland. Nearly 92% of the population lives in cities. We honor Dr. Sara Cody for her leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. From documenting the first U.S. COVID death to leading the County's testing and vaccination efforts, her actions saved lives and set a national standard for public health. As she announces her retirement, we wish Dr. Cody all the best in her next chapter. Her impact will never be forgotten.

Dr. Cody documented the first death of Covid in this country and was the first Public Health Officer to call for a shutdown of schools and businesses. Her actions were bold and unprecedented and, unfortunately, garnered hostile responses from people who didn’t understand such extraordinary measures were necessary to save lives. Over the next several years she expertly led our County through the response to Covid, all while enduring personal threats, name-calling and uninformed challenges to her expertise. Fortunately, and with the support of our County organization, Dr Cody stayed the course and led our residents?in one of the most effective responses in the nation to the virus that sickened millions and killed thousands. Under her leadership, Santa Clara County became a national leader in testing and vaccinating and in effectively reaching communities that held deep-seated concerns about the intentions of government with regard to health care. I am grateful for her leadership and am confident she has built an office and a team that will carry on her tremendous initiatives and legacy of commitment?to health equity for years to come. This week, Dr. Cody announced her retirement. Her leadership shaped Santa Clara County’s response to the pandemic and set a high standard for public health nationwide.
