The United States needs to act now to maintain its dominance in outer space, argues a new CFR Task Force report, "Securing Space: A Plan for U.S. Action." The report argues that as the United States adapts to the changing commercial, technological, and national security landscape in space, it needs to “make space a top national priority and commit to revitalizing U.S. leadership in space" The Task Force is co-chaired by former Congresswoman Jane Harman and retired Lieutenant General Nina Armagno, the first director of staff at U.S. Space Force, and is directed by Esther Brimmer, CFR senior fellow in global governance. The bipartisan Task Force includes over 30 members and observers representing the public sector, private sector, and academia. CFR trade policy expert Inu Manak explains the legal foundations behind the tariffs President Donald Trump could impose on April 2 and what they would mean for U.S. trade relations. She highlights two laws that could be used to justify new tariffs on U.S. trading partners: Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. While those laws grant the president broad authority to impose duties, their use in this context raises critical questions about trade policy, economic impact, and international relations. Understanding those legal mechanisms is essential as the Trump administration moves forward with new trade restrictions. Get more from CFR experts on trade and tariffs: https://on.cfr.org/4hVUKsn

Trump’s upcoming tariff barrage will hold back U.S.-based exporters and the growth they can bring. In my latest for Bloomberg Opinion, I argue that the U.S. should shift its focus from cutting imports to the other side of the trade equation and boost exports. https://bloom.bg/4jdqiLj
