Promising times ahead in Pittsburgh based on visionary university leadership. I had a great time at this event organized by the Pittsburgh Business Times, interacting with many Pittsburgh leaders and learning about the strategic plan for the University of Pittsburgh laid out by Chancellor Joan Gabel interviewed by Evan Rosenberg. There were several topics she covered including the role of the university in bringing talent from elsewhere and retention of them. Joan exhibited a witty sense of humor when she indicated that finding love in town was a factor in the retention of talent in the region. More seriously, she addressed how people stay when they find their careers. In Pittsburgh, for example, University of Pittsburgh is placing a big bet on a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University in life sciences and biotech, exciting careers with much future. Joan also addressed her role as vice-chair of the Council on Competitiveness, and mentioned an upcoming Council meeting to be held in 2025 in Pittsburgh. This is exciting, as I had a chance to participate in and appreciate the activities of this council in Brazil some years back when I collaborated with Deborah L. Wince-Smith, Chad Evans, and of course my friend Roberto dos Reis Alvarez. It was an informative and exciting lunch, including a great table conversation with Reeg Allen, Rachel Burcin and Constance Cavrich, discussing agriculture robotics, economic development, and the unique importance of the American Red Cross. Finally, I met @Mark Henderson and James Gallaher, members of Joan's team at the University of Pittsburgh. We all lived and worked in Illinois, remembering the vast agricultural activity surrounding us. As a father of two college students at that university, Camille Foessel and Albert Foessel, I left fully confident that they are in a fantastic university with an education and experience that points to a bright future ... and the same applies to the rest of us in Pittsburgh. #H2P #HailtoPossible #visionpittsburgh
