The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is an association of 765 nonprofit independent colleges and universities, state-based councils of independent colleges, and other higher education affiliates, that works to support college and university leadership, advance institutional excellence, and enhance public understanding of independent higher education’s contributions to society. CIC offers conferences, seminars, publications, and other programs and services that help institutions improve educational quality, administrative and financial performance, student outcomes, and institutional visibility. Founded in 1956, CIC conducts the largest annual conferences of college and university presidents and of chief academic officers in the United States.

CIC’s Campus Free Expression Project Roadmaps offer tailored advice for presidents, trustees, faculty members, and student affairs officers. The reports are free and available on the CIC website as resources to promote open discourse and prepare students as independent thinkers and engaged citizens.??? ? Jacqueline Pfeffer Merrill, Ph.D., director of the Campus Free Expression Project, will moderate a plenary session at CIC’s Presidents Institute focused on moving campuses toward a campus-wide approach to a free expression culture. The Educating Character Initiative (ECI) is accepting proposals for grants related to Building Capacity and Community at US Colleges and Universities. In 2025, ECI intends to award grants to both individuals and institutions, varying in scale, focus, and expected impact.? ? Since 2022, CIC has offered a series of virtual workshops?to help member institutions to achieve and manage National Science Foundation (NSF) grants for early-career faculty members in computer science and related disciplines.? Applications are open for the final workshop of the series, which will take place virtually on March 11–12. The workshop will bring together faculty members in computer science and related disciplines alongside grants officers at their institutions, with a focus on designing effective and compelling proposals and setting up a strong infrastructure to manage two NSF grant opportunities for early-career faculty members: the CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) and the Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER).??? ? Institutions are invited to submit applications for teams consisting of one (or two) untenured, tenure-track faculty members and one grants officer who has responsibility for soliciting and managing federal grants at the institution.? ?
