Only 8 percent of journalists report that they cover climate issues like energy and the environment, compared to 28 percent for political coverage. "Essentially, we are producing world-class research and record numbers of Black scientists with one hand tied behind our backs and shackles on our ankles," says Joseph Graves Jr in his Nature Magazine column on the historic underfunding (to the tune of *billions*) of HBCUs in the US. A bit of backstory on this one: I heard Dr. Graves speak at the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing's Patrusky Lecture at the 2024 National Association of Science Writers meeting in Raleigh. Even as someone who regularly covers racism in science, the history and the numbers in his talk were shocking and his refrain stuck with me: "one hand tied behind our backs and shackles on our ankles". I asked him if he'd write a Column for Nature Careers based on his talk and here we are. It became all the more important to see it published during the weeks of chaos that the 2nd Trump administration has sowed in academic science. Delighted to have helped to get this new Climate News Task Force established. In this age of disinformation, greenwashing, and straight-up lies coming from a variety of directions, support for solid, fact-based climate journalism is absolutely critical. This task force is an innovative new form of partnership across some great news outlets and I'm excited to see what it accomplishes in the months ahead!

I'm honored to help lead the Climate News Task Force, a new initiative to build collaborative tools and a roadmap for philanthropic funding for climate journalism. I'm so grateful to Emily Holden for her strategic vision and fearless leadership, and to Kat Duncan for sharing her collaboration expertise and innovation toolbox with the task force. Thanks to our supporters Sean Harder David Turnbull Mark Shields for making it possible, and most of all, to the Task Force members for taking time to help build a bigger and better climate journalism community.
