Our favorite falsehood is again included in a Verywell story, this time by Alyssa Hui-Anderson, with a review by Karina Tolentino, RD, CHWC, "Berberine Is Being Called ‘Nature’s Ozempic’—Does It Really Work for Weight Loss?" (https://lnkd.in/euSUXwur). Let's put aside that this is no longer news at all. This same story about #berberine has been in numerous publications and news reports since 2023. And while the story hasn't changed, neither has the inability for reporters to find experts who seemingly know what they're even talking about. Case in point: a quote in this piece by Lisa Kroon: "Kroon said it's important to remember that these supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (#FDA) and have not been studied on a large scale." That a pharmacist doesn't know that supplements ARE federally regulated is surprising to say the least. See FDA's web page: https://lnkd.in/eXSD9GnK Also, there is an actual law that gives the FDA authrority to regulate supplements, including berberine products, which all have Supplement Facts labels on the bottle (a clue, as this is a requirement under the law). And not to split hairs, but not "studied on a large scale?" A quick check of NIH's PubMed reveals over 8,000 studies of this ingredient (https://lnkd.in/eXb-_vXy). The media, and the health care professionals who are interviewed by them, should be honest with consumers and stop furthering this unfounded notion that supplement products are unregulated, or that there is no research being done on these ingredients, many of which are well studied.

The leading trade association of the dietary supplement / functional food industry—since 1973
关于我们
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), founded in 1973 and based in Washington, D.C., is the leading trade association representing dietary supplement and functional food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. CRN companies produce a large portion of the dietary supplements marketed in the United States and globally. Our member companies manufacture popular national brands as well as the store brands marketed by major supermarkets, drug stores and discount chains. These products also include those marketed through natural food stores and mainstream direct selling companies. CRN represents more than 150 companies that manufacture dietary ingredients and/or dietary supplements, or supply services to those suppliers and manufacturers. Our member companies are expected to comply with a host of federal and state regulations governing dietary supplements in the areas of manufacturing, marketing, quality control and safety. Our supplier and manufacturer member companies also agree to adhere to additional voluntary guidelines as well as to CRN’s Code of Ethics.

Couple of factual errors in Verywell's story ("How Much Apple Cider Vinegar Should You Drink Daily to See the Benefits?": https://lnkd.in/eVec4Tma). First, the writer, Patty Weasler, is discussing liquid apple cider vinegar -- the kind you cook with -- as a "supplement." This is not technically accurate for a regulatory perspective. In the liquid, bottled form, apple cider vinegar is a "food" item, hence the fact that it has a "Nutrition Facts" label on it. There are actual dietary supplements that contain apple cide vinegar and have "Supplement Facts" labels, but this is clearly not what the writer is refering to when she is discussing diluting a tablespoon of vinegar. And lastly, this statement is categorically incorrect: "Supplements are not managed or controlled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)." This article was supposedly fact checked by Sohaib Imtiaz MD MPH DipIBLM, Verywell's Chief Medical Officer. That such an inaccuracy clears that fact-checking process is stunning. Supplements are indeed managed and controlled -- i.e. regulated -- by the FDA (see: https://lnkd.in/eXSD9GnK). Liquid vinegar is, too, for that matter. Facts are important, and your readers deserve better.
