Scoring big for Women in Construction Week with our all-star civil engineering team for the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance ??♀??? A true rarity for an AEC design team, this group consisted of 85% women! The dedicated basketball training facility provides world-class training and resources for the Seattle Storm and symbolizes progress and inclusivity in sports. Fun fact: Did you know that the City of Seattle requires all stormwater manhole covers to display the word “storm?” Our civil team took this as an opportunity to design one-of-a-kind manhole covers along the baseline of the outdoor court that say, "Seattle Storm." These custom covers not only meet city requirements but also reflect the creativity and dedication of this women-led project team. Happy Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day! ??♀? ? In honor of #GirlDay we’re highlighting an incredible opportunity we had to work with the non-profit organization, ANEW and one of their Trade Rotation Programs (TRP). ANEW, which stands for “Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women,” is an organization dedicated to promoting women in non-traditional career pathways. Coughlin Porter Lundeen structural engineers, Camie Mamer and Marie Ternes Coleman, PE, SE, along with Shanni Hanein and Janice Yeung from Perkins&Will, spent two afternoons at ANEW’s training center in Tukwila leading hands-on design sessions with one of their TRP cohorts. During these sessions they educated the group on how to design and permit a new storage mezzanine for the center. ? "We had a fantastic time meeting with the ANEW students to walk through the design process for their new mezzanine. Their curiosity was contagious, sparking a flow of creative ideas. While we had a final design in mind, we ended up adjusting it based on their input to better suit their needs." - Marie Ternes, Structural Associate Principal ? We strongly believe in ANEW’s mission and are dedicated to fostering a future where women in the AEC industry are the norm, not the exception. By supporting initiatives that empower and elevate female talent, we hope to inspire women to pursue their passions and thrive in their careers. ? It's awesome to see that the City of Seattle is providing a tangible incentive to encourage office-to-residential conversions. Coughlin Porter Lundeen is very proud to be partnering with Stream Development and Orton Development on the two groundbreaking conversion projects mentioned in the article. Hopefully they can serve as a model for more conversions down the road. There still are challenges, including seismic requirements, but we put together a road map for addressing those requirements.
