Research shows the large majority of consumers (81%) think better quality garments are made from all-natural fibers like cotton. And that’s something independent designers seem to have figured out. Sure, they say they like the texture and feel of natural fabrics like cotton. And they like that natural fibers are biodegradable and return to the earth. But they say consumers ask and look for clothing made of natural fibers. And that tracks, considering 70% of shoppers who check labels are looking for cotton or cotton blends. The market did not react to Hurricane Helene, and this may be a reflection of what appears to be the dominant storyline in cotton supply and demand for the 2024/25 crop year - which is that there is a lot of exportable cotton supply around the world that appears like it will have to chase limited import demand. This has pushed prices lower over the past several months and may keep downward pressure on the market. Hurricane Milton was further south and missed cotton producing areas in Florida.
