As summer comes to an end, we’re sharing some of our Costco IT employee adventures! Meet Emily Johnstone, Technology Quality Assurance Manager for the?Costco IT Travel Booking Portfolio team. She joined Costco in May 2005. This summer she, her husband and a few friends traveled to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They were inspired to visit after watching “Yellowstone” on TV and doing some research on the area. So Emily, what was your favorite part?? “The most wonderful part was a mix of the beautiful naturescapes and the time we spent in Jackson Hole, WY going to the rodeo.” Where are you going next? “We’re planning a group trip to Zion National Park next year. But my dream vacation would definitely be a multi-country trip to Europe with a stopover in Iceland. What an unforgettable experience!!! Last week, we had the opportunity to hear from Ron Vachris, President and CEO of Costco Wholesale, at our Chamber Luncheon event. His inspiring journey from starting as a warehouse forklift operator to leading one of the world’s largest companies is a testament to hard work, dedication, and leadership. Ron also highlighted a few team members who started from the bottom and rose to leadership positions within Costco. One standout example was an individual who began as a meat cutter and is now the SVP of Merchandising for Fresh Foods! This truly showcases Costco’s deep commitment to empowering their workforce to grow and advance. One of the most engaging moments was when Kelly Richardson from Rowley Properties Inc. asked Ron how the community can support Costco. His response emphasized the critical role our community plays in Costco’s success, especially as they continue to grow. With a new campus spanning 624,000 sq. ft. and a total of 3.05 million sq. ft. of office space in Issaquah, Costco’s impact is monumental, not just globally but right here at home. Their 7,120 employees at the headquarters are a testament to that growth and their strong connection to our region. Ron’s words reminded us all of the importance of collaboration and community support in nurturing growth. His message, “Don’t just predict your future, create it!” deeply resonated with some of our team members, reinforcing the idea that our work in the community plays a significant role in shaping the future of both businesses and individuals. This week, we’re getting to know Matt Browning, AVP of International and Business Services. He just celebrated 25 years with Costco! What’s something you wish you had known early in your career? “I've learned that you don’t have to have all the answers. Surrounding yourself with great team members and smart people provides such an advantage to capturing many different perspectives. Costco has so many great people who work here with varying experiences and viewpoints. It’s truly one of the company’s strongest assets." What do you enjoy most about working at Costco? I just had my 25 year anniversary with Costco and in all of that time, I’ve never been bored. I love Costco as a company and Costco’s mission. I absolutely love the travel industry and all of the complexity and challenges that come with it. It’s a really fun combination that I feel fortunate to be a part of. Being over Costco Travel’s operations in countries outside of the U.S. allows me to really see and experience other cultures and get to know a lot of truly fantastic people.” A bit of Matt’s history: I grew up in a small farming community outside of Yakima, WA and moved to Seattle the year following my high school graduation. I am married to my beautiful wife, Julie (we met at Costco) and together we have two high-energy and crazy little kids that keep us busy and laughing. Twenty-five years ago, I was working at a technology company called WallData, who was the original maker of the software application Rumba. It was when Costco switched their AS400 emulation software from NetManage to WallData Rumba that a friend who worked at Costco corporate reached out and referred me to a position.
