Cosmic Writers is a 501(c)3 that aims to give all children the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to write creatively.

Cosmic Writers provides creative writing programming that bolsters children's communication skills within fun and engaging environments. Our flagship program, a series of virtual writing workshops called Word Camp, began in 2020 and has since served over 200 campers, teaching them genres from dystopian fiction to slam poetry. We have also begun working with educators to pilot in-person afterschool programs in schools. With our programming, children from all socioeconomic backgrounds come together to improve their literacy, express themselves clearly and effectively, and develop their critical and creative thinking skills.

We'd particularly like to shout-out to our longtime collaborators at ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships Drama, who will be utilizing "The Monster-Building Handbook" as their core text for 500 students this fall. This week was my Power of Poetry Workshop for Cosmic Writers's premiere program Word Camp. I never realized teaching the basics of poetry through the foundation of emotions would be so fulfilling! I really have seen that the children of tomorrow are so smart not just with writing but emotionally intelligent. It makes me so happy to see. I was so impressed and proud of each of my campers! They truly learned the idea of emotional intelligence through learning the art of poetry. One of the parents emailed me thanking me for having their children learn poetry when in reality it came naturally to him because of it being through his ideas of emotions! It really made me have an epiphany that even what other people might say is a "controversial" curriculum by teaching somewhat about social emotional intelligence when in reality it really showcases that it's not "controversial," it's just scary to take that step. It reminded me that every curriculum that is considered "controversial" just hasn't had the people that consider/deem it "controversial" actually teach it for the most part, they just look at what the curriculum contains and not how it's taught. Because in reality that step from curriculum to actually teaching the curriculum shows truly what students respond to. From what I can tell it's based on real world applications that they can truly connect with that is happening around the world that puts the power of understanding back into their hands. When you individualize a curriculum that's what's most important, not the curriculum itself. I feel this is a lesson that isn't just for social emotional learning curriculums but for all other "controversial" curriculum and skeptics of incorporating "controversial" curriculum into classrooms. This workshop has been one of the proudest classes I have taught in my whole teaching career and has really made me understand the idea of curriculum to the individualized teaching/teaching prep being so vital to understand the real impacts of how curriculum truly affects a classroom. To give a little snippet I have a group poem we worked on that shows a tiny bit of what we were able to do in one week. I continue to be proud of my work at Cosmic Writers and the amazing programs that not only I am able to teach but the other instructors as well!

It was beyond a pleasure to hold a short story residency within the Salk School of Science. We worked with 10 groups of 7th graders to hone their storytelling skills across 5 genres: historical fiction, horror, realistic fiction, dystopian fiction, and mythology. Today was the last day at our SALK Cosmic Writers Program! I'm so happy with the amazing progress my participants made with their historical fiction stories! Who knew we could have stories about a Vietnam solider getting his feet exploded off and becoming a murderer to a story about a women predicting the future of the Holocaust. My participants even had stories that took the concept of "rewriting history" further by writing something not taught in their history class by writing about the fall of the Egyptian Bronze Age or the Separation of Yugoslavia. The minds of tomorrow are amazing and so creative! So happy to have such an amazing and successful first workshop with such an amazing organization like, Cosmic Writers! ?? ?
