关于我们
CorpsAfrica is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2011 by a former Peace Corps Volunteer seeking to recognize and build on Peace Corps's enormous success by offering the same transformative experience to emerging leaders in Africa - giving them the chance to be a part of the solution for their own countries. CorpsAfrica applies the newest and best approaches to international development, including empowering local communities, promoting collaboration among NGOs and our development partners, monitoring and impact evaluation. We recruit men and women to move to high-poverty communities within their own countries for a year and initiate projects that fulfill key needs in their communities and whose impact and success can be carefully measured and monitored. CorpsAfrica started in Morocco and has expanded Senegal, Malawi, and Rwanda.

“In order to change people’s lives for the better, you need to first change their mindset” - Pres Kagame Over the last two days, I have witnessed how lives of communities in rural Rwanda are being positively transformed by working with the people to change their mindset and to unlock the potential (knowledge, skills, time, resources etc) within them. The CorpsAfrica Volunteers work with the communities to determine and prioritize their needs and identify unrecognized and underutilized resources that the communities can use to bring about economic and social development (asset based community development). I visited the Kira Musange Community Association in Nyamagabe District led by their formidable chairlady, Madam Chantal and facilitated by Volunteer Innocent. They have converted a swamp, donated to them by the government, into 3 fish ponds, a piggery and a farm for maize and beans. In only 5 months, the number of fish in the ponds has grown from 3,000 to 6,800; the pigs have increased from 21 to 28; and they have harvested 5 tonnes of maize and 2.6 tonnes of beans. The women feel empowered and dignified. They are now financially independent. They now have money for their health insurance (all members are paid up!) and for doing basic things in the household. They can even chip in to pay school fees for their children! I also met the Ryamaguli youth group under the leadership of Felix and facilitated by Volunteer Olive. The members got support to set up little individual income generating projects. They save part of proceeds through the groups. The savings are then used to buy chickens for the members. The group has so far distributed chickens to all 130 members and plans to set up a 3000-chicken poultry farm in the next 2 months. The youth got more than a source of income. They also have a renewed sense of purpose in life. They now have goals and targets for the future. Felix says, “We used to save money for Christmas, distribute it on 23rd and by 28th, there was nothing to show. Now we save with a greater purpose and we are growing individually and as a group.” Significantly, the transformation I witnessed was not just in economic terms: 1. In only 4 months, Volunteer Dieudonne has engaged with the community and succeeded in getting 40 children who had dropped out of school back to school by working with the parents to address the reasons for dropping out. 2. The sector talked of the positive impact the Volunteers are having as role models for the youth in the community. Seeing graduates from other communities and countries living humble lives within the communities has transformed the attitudes and behaviors of the youth in the Save community. 3. The social cohesion in the Taba Community. ‘Twitangire u Rwanda tutiganda’ - we serve Rwanda selflessly and with no reservation! #ThisIsCorpsAfrica #communityleddevelopment Liz Fanning Sue Dwyer Nelly Rwagitare CorpsAfrica Rwanda

In Kukuo, Ghana, seasonal water shortages—especially during harmattan—have driven community members to walk long distances to access water. To address this, the community initiated a dam expansion project aimed at year-round water storage and supply, benefiting the entire population of 987 residents. The expanded dam will be deepened and widened to store sufficient water, supporting both domestic needs and agricultural activities, allowing 40 farmers to cultivate even in the dry season. A Milestone for Early Childhood Development in Karonga! Sembe Mkandawire, a dedicated Cohort 7 alumna, united with her community to tackle child illiteracy and champion early education. Together, they built the community's very first nursery school, providing a safe, stable environment for young learners. This new facility will protect classes from disruptive weather, ensuring that learning continues uninterrupted. Thanks to this initiative, over 120 children that learn at this school now have a supportive space to grow and thrive. #ThisIsCorpsAfrica #DevelopmentRedefined #AfricanYouthShapingTheFutureofAfrica
