??? Meet Tom Hirschl, professor of global development at the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Tom’s research is motivated by the insight that social class differentiation is at the center of development in contemporary society. His work examines how individuals subjectively experience economic hardship and economic success over their life course, how they perceive and conceptualize these experiences in social ideological terms, including religious interpretations of the social world. ?? https://lnkd.in/eFVDvq7G

??MPS fieldwork spotlight ?? Eli Newell '24, MPS '25 spent winter break in Western Kenya with the Lake Victoria Aquaculture (LVA) Association, where together they are working to identify key opportunities and challenges for different stakeholder groups in the aquaculture sector across counties and scales. Their study is guided by the FAO’s Blue Transformation Roadmap 2022-2030 and Strategic Framework 2022-2031, with emphases on input value chains, environmental risk management, governance and regulation, and in what ways enterprise-level support could provide a better enabling environment for farmers to prosper and farms to grow. During the trip, Eli visited a farmer who shares a small cage with more than a dozen others, and we visited a farm that harvests 50-60 tons of fish every day and employs over 1,000 people; both operate in the same lake. "This trip has been most illuminating and has fundamentally reshaped how I understand the landscape of aquaculture in Lake Victoria — I look forward to continued collaboration with LVA and clarifying our findings over the coming months," Eli shares.
