Coreslab Structures (Indianapolis) Inc.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting students and professors from the University of Notre Dame and UC San Diego as they constructed an innovative structural system for high seismic regions. With funding from the Nation Science Foundation and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, their project focuses on developing a precast concrete buckling restrained braced frame (BRB), which helps dissipate energy during an earthquake and can be replaced afterward. Right now, they're in the component testing phase with numerical analyses conducted at Clemson University, but next year, they'll build a larger-scale model to test on a shake table at UC San Diego. Yesterday, Corey Greika, P.E. had the opportunity to join?Mrs. Schoolcraft's Engineering class at Center Grove High School?as they toured three civil engineering?projects around Indianapolis.?Their?first stop?was?the Citizens Deep Rock Tunnel Pump Station. We at Coreslab Structures?are proud to?be able to?contribute to this project,?providing exterior structural precast insulated wall panels with a brick pattern liner and a 250’ tall total precast stair/elevator core that leads down to the pumps themselves. Today we spotlight?the Fishers Arts & Municipal Center Theater, in Fishers, Indiana.? ? What is the fastest, safest, and most economical way to construction a 83’ x 62’ theater box, with 30’ structural vertical clearance and walls that cantilever 16 feet above the roof deck to provide screening of the mechanical units? Well, precast of course! Coreslab Structures is proud to have provided 12,500 SF of insulated precast concrete wall panels and 5,000 SF of roof double tees for this impressive venue. It took only (5) days to erect all the precast for the structure. The walls were provided with structural gray concrete mix, form finish exterior, and a smooth, hard steel trowel finished interior. The walls act as shear walls and are load bearing for the lower steel roof framing outside the theater box as well. Our team participated in Productive Conflict Resolution Training led by Stalin Encarnación with Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Through this training participants learned about different types of conflict, how to manage conflict, and conflict resolution. We at Coreslab Structures are excited this week! This Monday we started erection on the World Peace Bell Parking Garage, in Newport, KY. This project in the Greater Cincinnati area will be clad with various architectural panels with multiple mix designs and multiple brick selections. The garage is 409 spaces, 154,900 SF and has 411 total pieces of precast. We are excited to be a part of this mixed-use project with adjacent hotel on site. Tune in for more updates! As Engineers Week comes to a close, we have one more highlight to share! Today, we’re featuring Michael Owings, Engineering Manager at Coreslab Structures. Michael has been with Coreslab Structures for 27 years and shares what his most memorable projects are. "For ‘most memorable’ jobs I can narrow it down to two.?First is the Clarion People Mover Beams in downtown Indianapolis built in 2001.?This was a job of over 2.5 miles of post-tensioned beam pairs, up to 100’ long and all different.?Some had complex vertical curve and horizontal curve geometry with superelevation.?The piece drawings were some of the most complex we ever made (see sketch below) and handling these beams required specially designed adjustable steel frames and custom rigging configurations.?The job was an?absolute nightmare?from drafting & engineering to production, storage, shipping and erection.?When all the dust settled everyone performed great!?The second job was our 2020 Crane Bay Renovation Project where we redesigned the middle and south crane bay framing to receive (2) 20 Ton cranes when they were originally designed for only (2) 10 Ton cranes.?The engineering required for this renovation was very complex and required outside-the-box solutions.?Implementation of all fixes was complicated and very labor intensive and required constant modifications as installation progressed." Engineers Week continues! ?? Today, we’re spotlighting two more of our talented engineers, Tim and Shafee, who play a crucial role in bringing our projects to life at Coreslab Structures. When asked about his favorite part of the job, Tim shared,?"The variation is my favorite part of the job, but most of all I like when I can contribute a process-based improvement that can help increase accuracy and consistency.?Simple things can make a big difference over time." For Shafee, his favorite project so far has been the World Peace Bell Parking Garage. "This is my favorite project because I got to work on different product lines, including design and drafting DTs, IT beams, columns, and spandrels. It’s National Engineers Week! ?? To celebrate, we’re highlighting some of our talented engineers and the incredible work they do at Coreslab Structures. First up are Owen and Ninad! Owen’s favorite project so far has been the Evansville Christian High School Addition. He shared, “This is because it’s the first job I have been the engineering lead on. While the project itself hasn’t been too difficult, I have been exposed to far more of the construction process than I have been in the past. Because of this, I believe I have grown a great amount as an engineer over the last few months." Ninad Deshpande, PE shares that his favorite part of his job is being able to be involved in the different phases of a project. "At Coreslab, the engineers are involved in every aspect of the project from the stage the project is conceived all the way until erection. My favorite part is the coordinating phase where different trades like architects, MEP, structural, elevator, civil, and plumbing come together, which has helped me learn the most from a knowledge standpoint."
