  • Julie Lautens, Executive and Team Coach & Consultant Chief Client Development, Support, & Care Lead at Corentus, reflects on her experience reading 7 1/2 Lessons About the Brain, by Lisa Feldman: “ I’ve recently discovered Lisa Feldman Barrett’s 2020 book 7 1/2 Lessons About the Brain, which challenges common impressions about how the brain and body work with cutting-edge neuroscience. The key messages in this book have changed how I talk about finding center with clients. Barrett uses evidence and logic to show the brain is not reactive - it is predictive. Based on the past, it predicts the meaning of signals from moment to moment to meet the body's needs and optimize energy use. Often the predictions are helpful (we pull our hand away when we accidentally touch a hot stove), and sometimes, they are wrong (this person’s behavior suggests they don’t like me, when they are simply tired).???? Why does this matter? It shows we have more choice in how we respond to challenging situations when we build new habits and patterns.?To me, this is an incredibly hopeful and motivating message.?? The book is entertaining and presents a huge body of complex science in a very readable and thought-provoking way. I loved that LFB has written in first person and included personal anecdotes and her own more speculative interpretations along the way.?Reading this book felt like spending time with this brilliant and personable scientist.” https://lnkd.in/e7tav-fA
