On National Food Bank Day, we celebrate the legacy of our partner, St. Mary's Food Bank, the first-ever food bank established in 1967 by John van Hengel in Phoenix, AZ. Inspired by a young mother’s struggle to feed her children, Van Hengel envisioned a “food bank” where surplus food could be “deposited” by individuals and businesses and “withdrawn” by those in need. Today, we honor all food banks and the incredible employees who help children and families access the food and nutrition they need. We also look forward to joining forces with over 70 food banks next month, dedicating our time and energy on CoreGiving Day to support their vital mission. #NationalFoodBankDay #CoreGivingDay #EndHungerTogether

Did you know that over 13 million children in America face hunger? September is Hunger Action Month, and we’re shining a light on this critical issue. These young brothers recently enjoyed a simple pleasure—snacking on green apples and playing outside—while their mother shopped for free groceries at the Feeding Families pantry, operated by our incredible partner Community Food Share. Their smiles remind us of the millions of kids who deserve better access to nutritious food and why our work matters. As the school year kicks off, we’re honored to have sponsored Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s Hunger Free Summer campaign, which provided an incredible 6.7 million meals to children and families in need. One of those children is Jerick, a sixth grader with big dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. Jerick knows that proper nutrition is key to his athletic success, and he’s grateful for the support he receives from Second Harvest's Kids Cafe. This program offers free meals, snacks, and essential nutrition education to children facing hunger, both during the school year and over the summer. While Jerick enjoys his gummy worms, he also understands that vegetables give him the energy and strength to chase his dreams. At CoreGiving, we’re committed to making a difference year-round. As I wrap up my “work from anywhere” weeks and celebrate my second anniversary with CoreGiving, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brenda Mangru, Chase Eckman, and Serene Jneid for hosting me at Feeding San Diego last week. It was an inspiring visit, where I admired the powerful wall art that highlights the many faces of hunger, underscores the importance of food rescue for both individuals and our environment, and honors major donors like CoreGiving. I also had the chance to tour their newly expanded Marketplace, a space where community members can access no-cost groceries, including dry goods, frozen protein, and fresh produce. Feeding San Diego’s commitment to food rescue as a core strategy to nourish people and protect the planet is admirable, and volunteers play a crucial role in this effort. I’m excited that volunteers from BioMed Realty and EQ Office will be joining us in October for our fourth annual CoreGiving Day to help inspect and sort rescued food—an essential part of this important mission. #CoreGiving #FeedingSanDiego #EndHunger

I am working remotely from California this week and had an incredible visit to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, CoreGiving’s very first hunger-relief partner! While there, I had the pleasure of speaking with CEO Casey Castillo about their plans to mark their 50th anniversary in a new facility, which will help them meet the growing needs of their community. ?? I was also inspired by Michael Minjares and Kimberley Layton, who led me on an informative and entertaining tour of their current warehouse. Their passion for the food bank’s programs, which emphasize serving others with equity and dignity in the most efficient and sustainable way, was palpable. ?? I was impressed by their goal to increase the distribution of fresh produce to at least 50% of the total food distributed annually, as evidenced by the pallets full of pineapples and strawberries. I also viewed their state-of-the-art Recycling & Composting Center, which is helping the food bank become a zero-waste facility. This initiative also redirects funds previously spent on waste disposal fees to provide more meals for San Diegans. ?? ?? Michael, a beneficiary of the food bank’s programs as a child, concluded our tour with a heartfelt thank you for CoreGiving's support, which helps fund the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program each year. ?? ?? A huge thank you to Casey, Kimberley, and Michael for showing me how CoreGiving’s support fuels your impressive operations and critical programs. This week, I enjoyed the rare opportunity to meet in person with Charlene Moser at Food Bank of the Rockies as well as Allison Redmon Moreno and Che Cappadocia at Link Logistics. Thanks to our generous corporate partners and individual supporters, CoreGiving made the first of three planned gifts this year to advance the food bank's critical work in alleviating child hunger. Our donation will support the 1 in 7 kids facing food insecurity in Colorado. Our volunteers are also gearing up for our fourth annual CoreGiving Day in October, where they’ll sort food donations and pack meal boxes for local families in need.
