As exciting as it is to work with clients who are starting from the ground up crafting their dream home, there is something especially fulfilling about designing a historical renovation. It is a privilege to be caretakers of the past while simultaneously ushering in the new, imagining the milestones of the lives witnessed by a home - stacking and overlapping like the bricks that contain it - within the context of the timelines we know well from history books. It is a reminder that some things are unchanging; when the outside world carries on at a pace that feels chaotic, what transpires day-to-day at home narrates real life. This beautiful house in Providence is on the National Register of Historic Places, and CDA reworked the interior for the new homeowners while preserving the integrity of the space. In particular, the kitchen and bedrooms were expanded to maximize the floor plan, creating a fresh, bright backdrop for modern living.

CDA's latest hotel design, Island House, is opening in just a few weeks. Our team focused on building a sense of community in the space by incorporating room for both intimate and larger social gatherings, with an ultimate goal of hosting an inviting atmosphere for visitors. Neighboring rooms and suites can flow into one another so guests can enjoy a truly tailored experience in a modern - but comfortable - environment, with a touch of our region's maritime aesthetic.

One of CDA’s residential new builds is featured in the February issue of Rhode Island Monthly. More fulfilling than the notoriety is the evolution of how this special project came to be; the clients are neighbors of the family compound highlighted in our recent before + after montages. We had already completed renderings for a two-story house at the time the property was purchased, and the new owners added their touch by expanding the open-concept layout to include a third floor with bedrooms, a playroom, and a bathroom for their youngsters; selecting custom millwork; and steering away from Newport’s traditional coastal feel by nodding to their love of the mountains. By also creating a more spacious opening for the main stair, light from the upper levels travels freely down below. As the article describes, “the space now embraces its multiple personalities, permeating each sun-filled corner.” What a strong reminder that CDA’s work goes beyond design, and that we are helping to build the homes and neighborhoods that are the foundation of our community.

Our open-minded clients saw special potential in the outbuildings speckling their new property, and we used the older structures as inspiration for crafting a family compound. CDA aimed to design complements to the main house that not only gestured to the history of the site, but also added functionality and cohesion without being mere extensions of the central renovation. The result was a new, airy pool house and a barn-like garage housing a gym and guest suite.
