Science in action ?? New research is transforming how we protect coral reefs in the face of climate change! Our very own Dr. Andrea Rivera-Sosa contributed to a groundbreaking study, “Underlying drivers of coral reef vulnerability to bleaching in the Mesoamerican Reef,” now published in Communications Biology! This collaborative work examines the complex factors impacting coral reef vulnerability, focusing on both heat stress exposure and reef sensitivity to identify the areas most at risk. By using advanced predictive models and diverse heat stress metrics, the study provides valuable insights to inform and strengthen conservation efforts for our precious reefs ?? Dr. Helen Fox, our Conservation Science Director, has been in Mexico City attending The Nature Conservancy's One Conservancy Science Gathering! This event brought together TNC scientists, partner organizations, and conservation experts to collaborate on nature- and people-positive solutions to the climate, conservation, and biodiversity crises ???? Helen shared CORAL's impactful work in two talks, including a comprehensive look at our adaptive capacity research. She also presented research posters, one on IUU Fishing by Antonella Rivera and another on Wastewater Solutions by Jenny Myton. This is where science meets action, and we’re proud to be part of it! ??

Big change starts with local wins! ?? For the first time in five years, the Mesoamerican Reef has shown an improvement in its health, according to the 2024 HRI Report Card ???? This progress is made possible by the tireless efforts of coastal communities, supported by organizations like CORAL, working together on community-led strategies to secure clean water and protect healthy fish populations. But there’s still work to be done. The reef is still rated as “Poor,” and climate change remains a serious threat. Every step forward is driven by the dedication of those who are deeply invested in the reef’s future. We can’t stop now—let’s keep pushing for long-term resilience. Did you know the Cayman Crown Reef boasts 60% coral cover? That's a clear indicator of a thriving, healthy ecosystem—one of the healthiest in the Mesoamerican Reef system. And we're committed to keeping it that way ?? With support from Mesoamerican Reef Fund - MAR Fund, we’re working with local fishers in Honduras to strengthen their associations, promote sustainable fishing practices, and encourage income diversification. By balancing sustainable fishing with additional economic opportunities, together we're reducing pressure on the reef and supporting the long-term economic well-being of these communities.
